  1. I have three 40-50 foot maples in my back yard and my next-door neighbor has a 50-foot pin oak. I have no cicadas while they have shells all over the trunk of that tree, their deck, fence, etc. I also sat out yesterday and saw cicadas flying towards their tree one after another, like it was an airport.
  2. Had a decent shower a bit ago but hoping for more to get this pollen washed out. We won't get out of the 60s today but DCA was 80 just after midnight so that goes in the books as the very misleading "high" for the date. DCA got to 94 yesterday I feel for people that planned beach or pool parties this coming weekend with showers and highs upper 60s/low 70s, but that's what you get living in this area.
  3. Finally heard one in the yard briefly a while ago -- "PHAR oooooooh.....PHAR oooooooh" I wish we could trade the horrible annual cicadas for these
  4. It blew through Germantown at about 7 or 7:30 with some pretty big gusts and the temp dropped well down into the 70s. With the dry air it felt pretty cool.
  5. Wait a stinkin' minute -- this article on heat concerns for the summer olympics says that Tokyo's average temperatures in late July and early August are the highest for any host city going back to 1984. Are they saying Tokyo's summer temps are higher than Atlanta's (1996)? Hot Olympics
  6. Yeah it's pretty nice out there with the low humidity. I was looking at the NWS obs map and saw New River Bridge at 1 degree I clicked on it and found temps at -21 last night ha
  7. Gawd I hate those annual cicadas! I've had just two or three of them chase me in from enjoying time on our deck before. They were really persistent last summer.
  8. We had a pool growing up in Calvert and my parents still have it. It's really nice for summer family gatherings with their many grandkids. I remember doing grass cutting and weeding chores on a hot day as a kid then dropping into that pool Nestea plunge style
  9. Wow that's weird. Could it be road salt being pushed onto the grass and affecting the roots on that side of the trees? We get more salt accumulation than snow around here.
  10. Yup was moving our student out of her UMD dorm yesterday and saw quite a few on sidewalks. None here in Germantown yet.
  11. Looking forward to beautiful weather the next couple of days. LWX hinted at a back door front possibility this weekend with the GFS/GGEM saying maybe...it would be great if we got upper 70s with that. But the Euro says no, you bake.
  12. They are Autumn Blaze. I put them in 19 years ago after researching good shade trees (the back of our house and deck face WSW). Get this -- I read somewhere that they were SEEDLESS. Huge fail
  13. Got the rest of the gardens planted in the nice weather yesterday -- tropical milkweeds, lantana and titan vincas. Get out deer and rabbits, nothing for you here! Anyone have large maple trees that are struggling? I have three that seeded so heavily that they were completely covered in brown spinners that made them look like it was late November instead of late April in my yard. Then they dropped and the trees are really struggling to leaf out. It's mid-May and they are only maybe halfway leafed out. I thought multiple branches were dead but they finally have some tiny leaf buds. I guess they'll finally be fully leafed out by June. That's crazy. Anyone else seeing this?
  14. Yesterday was such a beautiful day to get the garden planting finished. I wish we had more days like that! May looks so great on paper with avg highs starting at 71 and going to 79, but it seems like days in the 70s are rare. Case in point DCA just recorded 10 straight days below/much below average, and just like clockwork here come the 90s.
  15. “Why, you stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf herder!”
  16. More frozen than we some in some winter months around here
  17. Just had strong gusts to 40-45 with soft, pea-sized hail and some thunder, temp dropped back to upper 40s. Brrrrrrr
  18. Oh man so JEALOUS! We have a Wegman's a mile away, but grocery chains in MontCo can only have one location each in the county that carry wine and beer and we don't have it.
  19. Thanks to all for posting vax experiences. I get the second Moderna on May 18. I have parents and siblings in Calvert and St. Marys and none of them plan to get vaccinated.
  20. Feels wintry out at 46 degrees. I am not liking the pattern over the next 10 days with temps 10-20 below average and frequent rains. Mothers' Day looks wet and cold. So much for dinner on the patio of one of our favorite restaurants. Oh and the obligatory where was this pattern in February
  21. I saw on WTOP that some people in an old neighborhood with mature trees took shovelfuls of dirt and counted the nymphs, and came up with an estimate of 1 million cicadas PER ACRE. That is gonna be crazy. We'll visit family in Calvert a couple times to get away from the noise.
  22. Probably that. Being young makes the side effects stronger due to your stronger immune system. We have older relatives that had no effects at all from shot 2. Keep us updated!
  23. Height off the ground is fine -- one of mine is 12 feet up. Is it your first year putting them out? It took a while for them to discover my feeders the first year, but they became regular after that. Just make sure you keep the nectar fresh and they'll come around.
  24. Today was perfect for heavy garden work including tilling and getting a bunch of plants in. Overcast all afternoon but no rain, about 70, and enough of a breeze to keep the gnats out of my eyeballs. Looks like some showers later this evening which will be nice.
  25. Next weekend is looking troughy. Chilly Mothers' Day?
