  6. the greatest period of winter for me was from January 15th, 1961 to February 4th 1961...34" of snow and 16 straight days with a maximum 29 or lower...some close areas had temps in single digits just as long...
  7. 1977 had the coldest 30 day period of my lifetime...it averaged 21.9 in Central park...it included most of January and the first few days of February..,.1980-81 was a close second with a 30 day average of 22.2 which came around Christmas 1980 to late January 1981...you have to go back to the 1930's for a colder 30 day period than 1976-77...1917-18 has the coldest with a 19.0 average from late December to late January... winter......coldest 30 days... 1976-77...….21.9... 1980-81...….22.2... 2003-04...….22.5 1993-94...….23.5 2014-15...….23.9... 1969-70...….24.0... 1970-71...….24.2
  8. Jan 77 had a -7sd ao for three days mid month...it was negative most of the winter months...lowest numbers for a neg ao on record...the nao was neg most of the winter also...pna was strongly positive most of the time...it was a dry el nino year with California in drouth conditions...
  9. I liked the next winter much better...less cold...more snow...77-78 was colder if you factor in March...the lack of a major snowstorm in 76-77 and the early exit in March go against it...There was record cold along the way...It started in late August 1976...NYC ties its all time lowest August minimum...October had two days within one degree of Octobers all time min...November had continued record cold...December 1976 and January 1977 are near the top of the coldest Dec and Jan combos...February started out quite cold but ended milder...March was warm...April 1976 and 1977 had record or near record cold and record heat a few days later...
  10. el nino took a hit last week...oni was down to +0.1 for the week...I thought a strengthening el nino this time of year would help matters...1992-93 comes to mind...now that possibility is off the table...what else can go wrong...
  11. 1877-78...the year without a winter... https://www.wlfi.com/content/news/Local-Weather-History--The-Winter-Less-Winter-of-1877-78-566768271.html
  12. the ao was negative from Christmas to April that winter...there was also long stretches of neg nao that winter...he can't be serious about this...
  13. JB picked March 1960 because March 1896 was not available......I picked March 1960 back in September...too bad it wont be like that...but I still think March 2020 has the biggest snowstorm of the season but that aint saying much...I would not be surprised if the storm is a March version of the early December event......
  14. on this date in 1958 NYC got 8-10" of wind swept snow around the area...temperature dropped to 3 degrees a day later...I was in the third grade at the time and remember what I was doing before and after the storm...
  15. JB just jinxed my 1960 analog...it was the only analog with all three winter months warmer than normal with a historically cold and snowy March...the way this year is going we will be lucky to get a March like 1992 or 1980 let alone 1960...the biggest snowfall in Central Park so far is 2.1" in January...I had 3.5" in early December...I think March will have a bigger storm with 3-5" or so... some weak snow years with the biggest snowstorm coming in March... year...….seasonal snow...March snowstorm... 1959...………...13.0"...………...5.5"...……………... 1968...………...19.5"...………...6.6"...……………... 1976...………...17.3"...………...4.2"...………...…. 1980...………...12.8"...………...4.6"...…...……….. 1981...………...19.4"...………...8.6"...……………. 1992...………...12.6"...………...6.2"...………... 1998...………….5.5"...…………..5.0"...…………... 1999...………...12.7"...………...4.5"...………….. 2007...…………12.4"...…....…..5.5"...………….
  16. I grew up in the 1960's...it was a great decade for snow...Christmas was white almost every year...then came the 1970's and 1980's...from the 1969-70 winter to the 1991-92 winter NYC had one winter with at least 30" of snow...1977-78 had over 50 inches and two storms over a foot...1979 had a snowstorm over a foot...1983 had an 18" snowstorm...1982 had the April Blizzard...since the 1992-93 winter there have been 14 years with at least 30" of snow and to many major storms to mention...in todays world with more moisture in the air snow droughts could be short but who knows for sure...after the snowy 1940's NYC had six winters with less than 20" of snow...the seventh year was 1955-56...it was even worse going into March until two major storms came during the third week of March...that period was much drier than today is...before the 1995-96 winter NYC had two years with a storm 20" or more...1888 and 1947...since 1996 the city has five...1996, 2006, 2010, 2010, 2016...2003 and 2011 just missed 20"...
  17. the coldest maximum day so far this winter was 25 degrees on 12/19...today was 29 or 30 for the max...the record for the warmest seasonal max is 31 set in the 2001-02 season...last years coldest max was 14 on 1/31... season.....coldest max... 2001-02......31 1997-98......29 1952-53......29 1974-75......27 1992-93......27 2011-12......27 1998-99......25 2000-01......25 2019-20......25 1961-62......24 2005-06......24
  18. March 5th 1981... NYC got 8.6" of snow with a very negative ao and nao with a positive pna... March 5th 2015... NYC got 7.5" of snow with a very positive ao and nao with a negative pna... March can deliver regardless of the indices at the time...March 2009 ahd no indices going for it... March 1960 had a neg ao but positive nao and neg pna... March 6th has the most 2" or greater snowfalls than any other date for NYC...
  19. lowest minimum so far this winter is 16 set back in December...the record highest winter minimum in Central Park is 19 set in 2001-02... winter...winters min temp... 2001-02......19...Feb/Mar... 2019-20......16...Dec... 1931-32......15...Mar... 1974-75......15...Jan... 1997-98......14...Jan... 2000-01......14...Dec... 2005-06......14...Dec... 2016-17......14...Jan/Mar... 1936-37......13...Dec... 2009-10......13...Jan... 2011-12......13...Jan...
  20. JB is seeing more ghosts than Sam Darnold did against the Patriots...
  21. so far this winter NYC had only two days with a maximum 32 or lower...the record is two set in 1952-53... winter...# of days max 32 or lower... 2019-20......2 so far... 1952-53......2 1997-98......3 2001-02......3 1931-32......5 2007-08......6 2011-12......6 1918-19......7 1990-91......7 1992-93......7 1974-75......8
