you could have bet the house April was going to be cool when we wanted it warm...1918-19 which was one of the least snowy and mild winters on record had a cold spell the end of April...a couple of Aprils in the mid 1960's did not get a warm day until the last few days in the month....it could have been 1965 or 66...nao finally went positive today...that's a good sign...
-
lasted neg nao forecast isn't as bullish today but the ao forecast is more negative...the sub normal maximums could continue another week or so...
-
I recorded 1.30" of le and no more than a half inch at one time on the ground for the April 9-10th liquid snow...

on this date in 1875 NYC had its latest heavy snowfall on record...10" was measured in Central Park...temps got as low as 30 during the storm...it wasn't the last of the snow or cold that month... 1875... https://bklyn.newspapers.com/image/50419405 http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83030313/1875-04-14/ed-1/seq-6/ https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83030313/1875-04-14/ed-1/seq-7/

China isn't going to listen to Dr Fauci or anyone else...take away the bugs and bats and their population would starve...

we know deblahzio is big bird...whats coumo?...
-
todays ao forecast is leaning more negative than yesterdays forecast...The nao has a few members falling off the table...I was counting on the nao getting positive later this month...some members are still positive so we wait...

we can joke when there is good news...being a cop today is really tough...I had an uncle who was a cop and committed suicide back in 1962....I know first hand the pressures of being a cop...
-
I figured that...my four year old grandson who needs pre school will suffer the most...If Deblahzio has his way the city will never open...I heard he still goes to Brooklyn every day to walk in Prospect Park...he can do it with his security but us pee ons cant...

great news...stay safe...

before 1982 April snowstorms were of the wet variety...it was snowing hard mid day with temperatures in the mid 20's...the next day with bright sunshine the max temp in NY was only 30 degrees...21 years later there was the 4-7" of snow in 2003...15 years later 4-7" fell in 2018...since 2011 NYC has seen three early season snowfalls...October 2011...3-6" in the city...early November 2012...4-7"...Nov 2018 with 4-7" also...I think 2018 holds the record for the least amount of days between 5" snowfalls in a year...early April to mid Nov...1938 is a close second but has the record for the least amount of days between 6" snowfalls in a year...

that's to bad...hope you get through unscathed...

1923 in Yankee Stadium as The Bronx was beginning to be developed... https://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?141127

chitty winters usually get the best patterns for snow before Dec 15th and after March 15th...1996-97 was bad but in early December and April 1st saw noreasters with marginal temperatures...in mid winter both times would have been big snowstorms...
-
it will become political one way or the other...besides its to morbid and we need to get back to weather to keep our minds off the scariness around us...be safe out there...
-
Sandy is not the worst scenario...you can get a cat 4 hitting just below NYC from the south east then stalling...Irene in 2011 and Sandy in 2012 followed by early heavy snowfalls...looking back 2010-2012 were wild years...

as far as getting another freezing morning its not over but its over...NYC had 48 days with a minimum at least 32 or lower... lowest amount of minimums 32 or lower and consecutive... 2011-12.....37 2015-16.....46 2001-02.....47 2019-20.....48 2016-17.....49 1997-98.....49 consecutive days... 1997-98.....4 2011-12.....5 2019-20.....6 1990-91.....8 1952-53.....8 1972-73.....9 1948-49.....9 1920-21.....9 NYC got only three days with a maximum 32 or lower and only one consecutive day... lowest amount of days with a max 32 or lower... 1952-53.....2 1997-98.....3 2001-02.....3 2019-20.....3 1931-32.....5 2007-08.....6 2011-12.....6 consecutive days max 32 or lower... 1952-53.....1 1990-91.....1 2019-20.....1 2011-12.....2 ….plus 13 other years... lowest max..... 1952-53.....31 1997-98.....29 1952-53.....29 1974-75.....27 1992-93.....27 2011-12.....27 1998-99.....25 2000-01.....25 2019-20.....25 lowest winter minimum..... 2001-02.....19 1974-75.....15 1931-32.....15 2019-20.....14 2016-17.....14 2005-06.....14 2000-01.....14 1997-98.....14

the pesky neg nao could be around for a while...the ao did not get as neg as advertised and is forecast to stay somewhat positive...the neg nao will stunt any warm air for now...Central park had a low of 38 this morning and could end up as the coldest April minimum...38 is a pretty high number but not a record...the record is 42 set in 1878 after another single digit snow year...2012 had a 38 monthly min also...2010 comes in second with an April min of 40...
-
severe weather is the last thing we need with the virus still around...I hope it doesn't happen but in some places it will get it...we don't need power outages or other problems from severe weather on top of what we are experiencing now...
-
we could use some warm dry days but until we get the neg ao out of the way we will continue to see some cool dreary days...this happens almost every Spring now...
-
the neg nao will have little help from a more neutral ao...the nao is forecast to dip pretty low but rebound mid month...the ao looks positive mid month...I think the first week or two in April will continue the every other day of rain and cool with one or two brief warm days...After mid month break out the shorts and tanning lotion...
