  1. my first winter on this earth was 1949-50the first good winter of my life was 1955-56...only a great second half of March and April saved that winter...56-57 wasn't that great making one out of eight winters exceptable...the 1950's only had two exceptable winters...the sixties had five good to great winters...the 2000's had six good to great winters...the 2010's had eight...the last two winters were bad to worse but we did get a record breaking mid November snowstorm in 18-19 and a record breaking snow in May 2020....the terrible winter of 2011-12 had the greatest October snowstorm ever...Since 2010 there have been some record breaking snowfalls... 2009-10...three storms over 10" for the first time on record...snowiest February on record... 2010-11...two storms 19" or more for the first time on record...snowiest January on record... 2011-12...October snowstorm...first October snowstorm on record... 2012-13...Early November snowstorm two weeks after Hurricane Sandy... 2013-14...another 50" snow season... 2014-15...another 50" snow season... 2015-16...biggest snowfall on record in January... 2016-17...30" even though it was a mild winter... 2017-18...a 40" season... 2018-19...early mid November snowstorm...record early cold... 2019-20...May snowfall and record late cold...
  2. this years el nino could end up as the weakest on record...oni has been +0.5 for five three month intervals...It may very well be another bad winter...timing has been off with very cold November outbreaks ( three years in a row ) and mild February's...1917-18 was a very good winter overall...I'll sign up for that now...
  3. up to 1970 the average annual rainfall for NYC was around 42"...since 1970 the average is around 50"...that's about 20% more over the last 50 years...

  5. after one of the coldest Mays on record June 1967 was warm...it turned out the only Summer month with temps above average...80 degrees this time of year is seasonably warm...I'd like to see a hot summer day...I hope today was the last of the record cold...it could get hot for a day or two...Some years had their hottest period of the year around the end of May...1880 with three straight days over 95 comes to mind...1969 and 1987 too...
  6. this second week in May so far has to be one of the coldest second week of May on record...
  7. March 7th 1990 had a low of 13 with 3" of snow on the ground...six days later on the 13th it was 85 degrees...
  8. this is backdoor season and the ocean is still cold enough to drop temps in the 40's if the winds come off the ocean...
  9. in May 1947 at Newark the temperature went from 34 on the morning of the 10th to 85 on the 12th and 90 on the 13th...the temp dropped from 90 on the 13th to 42 the next day...
  10. in May 1970 Newark had a low of 38 on the 7th and a high of 91 on the 9th...a 53 degree rise in two days...

  13. looking back at May 1947 and May 1923 shows some similarities to this years cold spell...both had two mornings in the 30's with sleet in the area...1947 warmed up to 83 on the 13th and then it got cold again for a few days and warmed up again to 80 on the 20th...1923 warmed up later on the 26th...81 was the tops...two years I remember that started out cold the first 10 or so days in May and then had its hottest temperature of the year 10 days later...1962 99 degrees on the 19th and 1996 with 96 on the 20th.....62 was on the hot side until mid July...96 was on the cool side throughout...
  14. if NYC gets below 40 tonight 2020 will ty 1874, 1891, 1923, 1947, 1963 for the most days in the 30's for May...
  15. there have been years when the summer extended and then winter...1895 had a heat wave on 9/22...highest temp of the year....March 1896 was the snowiest on record... edit...1914 had its hottest temp of the year on 9/22...April 2nd 1915 there was 10" of snow...
  16. its kind of rare to see record lows for two days hours apart...it happened in November 2019...
  17. 1878 had a min of 42 in April and 40 in May...2010 just missed...
  18. when noaa switched to ASOS reporting its missed many a trace of snow...they need feet on the ground but those days are over...there should be a video camera operating so we can go to the video tape as Warner Wolf used to say...

  20. if Central Parks observatory gets inches of hail would that count in the seasonal snow totals?...I remember one place in Jersey getting a foot of hail over a small area...hail should have its own column in the climate reports...
  21. I've seen old climate reports that had a trace of snow in all the summer months...it was all hail...
