a heat wave should be measured by a mean temperature 80.0 degrees or higher...days with a max 87 and a min of 73 is just as bad or worse especially if its more humid than a day 90/70...

NYC obs used to come from the roof of 17 Battery place in downtown Manhattan...not sure where they measured snow...it changed in 1961 when official obs were taken in Central Park...snowfall measurements have been suspect at times from there since awos was installed...having the NYC weather bureau in eastern Long Island don't help matters...

next year was supposed to be the hot summer...this year might be the 11 yr cycle summer a year early...the 11 yr hot summer cycle had summers that were hotter than the one before and after...if next year is hotter we might as well be in Tampa...95 now...down from 97...

LGA had a low of 80 this morning...as predicted it is the first place for an 80 degree minimum...

my family is at Space farms today in Wantage...nice day to go there but its to warm for me...

I started writing about the higher minimums almost 20 years ago when I was on the weather channel board...long gone are the years like 1962 when NYC had less than 10 days with a minimum 70 or higher...it does that in ten days every year it seams...the average amount of 70 degree minimums in NYC has gone up by at least 10 since 2000...

so far the coolest minimum in Central Park this month is 67...if that holds up it will become a new record for the highest July monthly minimum...it was 69 this morning in a little rain in NYC...it broke a long stretch with a minimum 70 or higher...

the water is on the other side of the upper runway...there has to be planes taxiing very close to the censors...

Central parks elevation was 132ft last I looked...Newark and the airports are more than a hundred feet lower...that's a small percentage for the difference...the parks thermometer censor should be moved to an open grassy area...its a shame the official readings dont come from an official obs placement...I think the foliage effects low temperatures too making them slightly higher than they should be...
