it hit 25 in April 1977...less than a week later it was 90...then it snowed in May...a few weeks later it was 90 again...the 70's were noted fot late season cold and early season cold...

i got used to busts growing up in the 1960's...I woke up to a heavy snow warning only to see the Sun out when I looked out my window...probably happened in Jan. 62...One day in Jan 1965 I went to bed with no snow in the forecast and awoke to a heavy snow warning...

the same dates as the Dec 1973 ice storm...that winter was mediocre but better than all the early 1970's winters...

why most people were cookie cutting the la nina long range failed to look back at the years that were like this...this year is like 1973-74 on steroids...

NYC needs 6.8" by March 1st to reach 30" in 30 days...a big chunk if not all will be added after this storm...it needs 6.7" by Feb 24th for the 30/30...1973-74 was an analog with late season snows...those 1970's analogs with February being the coldest month had record or near record cold in April...lets hope that doesn't happen...I rather have 80 and Sunny by then but who knows for sure...the first warm day is a different kind of rush to the senses...

record snow for 2/18 in NYC is 3.5" in 1928...its 12.7" on 2/19/79...

Central Park had 80 days in a row below 50 degrees from 12/29/68-3/15/69...that year had blocking 24/7 all winter...ok maybe a few hours off...this year with less cold and similar blocking we got more snow...

the 1980's had colder temps in Tampa... 21 January 21, 1985 19 December 26, 1983 22 January 13, 1981

Newark had 10" of snow on the ground this morning and the 13th day this month there was at least 10" of snow on the ground sometime during the day...8 in a row now...2014 had 9 in a row from the 13th-21st and 10 overall...1994 had 8 in a row and 9 overall...1961 had 7 all in a row...2003 and 2011 6...I think this is a new record for Newark Airport...

I think there was a sharp rise in the AO just before the blizzard of 2016...it was almost a -5sd...

1973-74 was one of the analogs that had the snowiest coldest month in Feb...that winter had its share of ice also...

NYC only 2009-10 had three 10" storms...but 1960-61 had three with one being 9.9"...Newark had three in 1957-58 and 1960-61...

I count it...In March 1970 the ao dropped to -6sd...it took four weeks before NYC saw a snowstorm...the Easter 1970 storm...

the same reason millions of Americans drive... when you look back at this winter it was a winter with a -5sd ao and had a major blizzard...comes with territory...as the block eases we are missing the big storm I envisioned..,there is still time left for another big one...after the ao gets slightly positive it could get negative again for some March madness...TWT...

on this date in 1969 we were digging out and 2010 it was coming down...I got 13" in 2010 on SI...1969 was bigger...The 69 storm was unsceen by forecasters until it was sceen...2010 was forecast pretty good...

the AO forecast is still going with a -5sd which would be in the magic zone...today was about -4.6sd...I can't imagine cutters with the huge block we have...tmy money is on another blockbuster before its over...
