Living in SW Brooklyn we had many warm mornings and colder afternoons as the wind shifted from the west to south to southeast...the south shore of Staten Island where I live now is similar...the worst is when it gets foggy like you discribed above...I remember freezing a few times when I went to Coney Island at night...

1945-46 Was a snowy December and February winter...before my time...I know hard to believe...

I remember the first week in May 67 and I saw wet snowflakes mix in with heavy rain I forget the day...Cold rain on Memorial Day 67...

I liked the storms when I was younger better...40" snow seasons are the new norm...from 1969-70 to 1992-93 there was only one winter with 40" or more and that year was 1977-78...we have exceeded. that winter six times since 1995...my favorite snowstorm as a kid is a toss up of March 1960 and Dec 1960...as a middle aged man Jan 1996 is a favorite and maybe alltime favorite depending on what side of the bed I woke up that day...recent favorite storm is the Dec 2010...

it was a great ending to a great winter...a few days after the cold wave almost 10" of snow fell...

and so is saying this winter wasn't that good...I would take this winter over any winter from 1979-1992...

you can say that about these winters which were 40"...2005-06...1959-60...winters like 2007-08 are nothing winters...

its hard to radiate when you have a roof of branches above the probe and being shaded it helps keep daytime highs down...so we have cooler highs and warmer lows...you can say that's because of the extra water vapor in the air...probably a little of both...

there is something different about radiation shields and weather shelters or box's for thermometers...I've found radiation shields are not as good as the old weather shelters or box's in direct sunlight...I think Central Parks instrument location effects nightime lows too...

back in March 1983 the city was thinking about drought restrictions...after a few deluges in March and april flood warnings were issued instead...

the spread in minimum temperatures 32 or lower between NYC and Newark NJ is getting larger...Newark has 79 so far while NYC has 64...since 1955-56 there has only been five years that Newark did not have more 32 minimums than NYC...1993-94 was even...1992-93 was minus 2...1973-74 was minus 2...1970-71 was minus one...1958-59 was minus 4...2018-19 was plus 23...2012-13 was plus 22...1957-58 was a plus 20... 2010-11 to 2020-21 averaged a plus 16.3 over NYC... 2000-01 to 2009-10 averaged a plus 11.1 over NYC... 1990-01 to 1999-00 averaged a plus 11.0 over NYC... 1980-81 to 1989-90 averaged a plus 12.9 over NYC... 1970-71 to 1979-80 averaged a plus 6.7 over NYC... 1960-61 to 1969-70 averaged a plus 10.6 over NYC...

this year was 2007-08 on steriods...

If this year has no measurable snow in March but a little in April it would be only the third time that has happened in NYC...I think there is only two winters that had a great February with major storms with no measurable snow in March but measurable snow in April...1894 and 1921...

Newark NJ had a low of 33 today just missing a 32 minimum day...they have 78 so far compared to NYC with 64...NYC was 31 today for number 64...Newark usually has 10-20 more freezing days than NYC... this winter was very good...anytime you get close to 40" and a major snowstorm its good...this winter had a little or a lot of combined analogs talked about before the winter...December and February being the main winter months...2007-08 was in the mix...this year was 2007-08 on steriods...1973-74 was in there...December 16-17 had the great ice storm...2020 was mostly snow...the first week in February 1974 had measurable snow on five of the first 8 days...this year was similar but much snowier...1966-67 and 2005-06 was mentioned as analogs...if you pick the right analogs you can come up with a better forecast than seasonal models....going in I was thinking 20-25" of snow...after the December storm I raised expectations...

maybe...it hasn't snowed on Christmas eve in a long time...last time it snowed on the 17th was in 2004...2007 ice storm ends early on the 17th...

it snowed a little on 3/17 in 1959, 1960, 1965, 1967...could have been any of those years...1967 was a cold snowstorm for this time of the year...

yeah April 1982 was a once in a lifetime event...I measured 13.5" in the Poconos and when I got home that evening there was 8" on the ground in Brooklyn...the next day was the coldest for so late in the season with a high of 30 with Sunny skies...
