  1. I am certain this is going to be a cold, snowy winter. Six 12"+ events for regionwide SNE. How do I know? I fired the guy who hays my fields, and afterwards I remembered that he plows my driveways for free.
  2. There are many reasons they desire to overshoot on that number.
  3. 3:30 am. Got up to grab an extra blanket from the closet. 46.7. Dew ar 44.3! Passed out at 9 with the windows and doors open.
  4. It could be a new reality show- The Real Loggers of New England. No, I bought those 3 cords on the right, and that grey stuff in the center is a cord of punky crap I got last year for free which I use outdoors in pits, or I toss one in the stove when it's really hot.
  5. Just an outstanding day. I labored today on a garden down near the barn. Rototilling, edging, weeding, and putting in a 240lb cast iron gate for next year's roses. It was cool enough to work, but the shade from passing clouds was quite welcome.
  6. Yeah. I usually set my cruise control to 74 in a 65, figuring the rule "over 10" applies. But doing so, I constantly run up to cars that must set theirs at 73.
  7. I'll have to keep that in mind on my trips to the Cape. A neighbor on the Cape has a son who is a trooper. He said you're basically OK on I-90 as long as you're not going over 80. If it's raining, you can go as fast as you want- "a good cop is a dry cop."
  8. 67.6/67.5 Thought it was getting better earlier on, but still dewy. Found a decent old pair of binoculars and looked at Andromeda. Amazing how many stars show up in a black patch of sky just with binoculars.
  9. Finally sunny here after two days of cloud. Temp jumped 3 degrees in last hour to 77, dews soon to be settling down. 5 day stretch of late summer beauty incoming.
  10. 73.2/72.1. Feeling exceptionally dewy, too. Last year I had one large female Orb on the front porch. I let her be, and even fed her moths at night that I picked off the side of the house. Fun to watch her inject venom, and then spin them into a cocoon. This year, I have three females and had dozens upon dozens of the little males. I had to do some extermination or people were going to start talking.
  11. Yeah, should get some sun here in W CT within the next hour or so. Yesterday we were stuck under a damp stratus layer all day.
  12. https://foragerchef.com/cauliflower-mushrooms-sparassis/ Some great recipes that employ the Cauliflower mushroom.
  13. Hit a low of 57.2. Pretty normal it seems. Wednesday was the winner this week- a forecast busting 85.1 and a steamy dew of 79.7. Unlikely to see that combination until next year.
  14. Maybe all the money they save on cooking.
  15. That Summer ..to watch the storm in all its wonder... ...that summer wind was all around me...
  16. Brother's daughter/my niece goes to public school here in Bethlehem. Every Wednesday is a half day. No one know why, or for what. If you drive by on Wednesday about 20 minutes after the kids depart on the buses, 90% of the teachers are also leaving. The cumulative economic costs to the families and society cannot be overstated.
  17. I'm at 900 feet and I hit 85.2 at 3:30. High dew today was 79.7.
  18. Female Orb spider? I have several on my porch. They're like pets. The females are quite large, the males are puny. I grab moths off the side of the house and toss them into the web and watch the females inject the venom and wrap it up in the cocoon. Very soothing pastime.
  19. Absurd. This country is creating a nation of pansies.
  20. I'd like to get a rainfall/hail reading for Colton Hollow, MA area. Looks to be getting destroyed for over an hour.
  21. From Albany: MUCAPE values (most unstable CAPE) are between 2000 and 25000 J/kg across western New England where this the favorable location to see severe thunderstorm criteria of damaging wind gusts (>58 mph) and/or large sized hail (>1 inch in diameter).
  22. July 4, 2023 we were up here watching fireworks at several points along the horizon. But the best show was to the northeast, 105 miles away where a thunderstorm was firing up over Albany. The lighting bouncing off the clouds was phenomenal, and practically nonstop.
  23. Today will feature a moderately unstable environment with 1500-2000 J/kg of surface based instability. 0-6km shear is not looking quite as decent as it did yesterday with only 15-25 knots of shear. The severe weather setup is still rather similar to the one we saw on Thursday July 15th where a strong cold pool dropped south from Northern New England. This event brought severe thunderstorms that dropped up to 1.5 inch hail and numerous reports of damaging winds. Soundings show an even more impressive environment then last time with large cape profiles and moderately steep mid level lapse rates between 6.0-6.5 C/km. Low level lapse rates are very steep around 8- 10C/km. With freezing levels around 10kft and elongated straight line hodographs, the primary threat appears to be severe hail of 1 inch or greater. The damaging wind threat is a close second primary threat. Even with weak low and mid level wind fields, very steep low level lapse rates will allow any bowing segments to pose a damaging wind threat. The DCAPE values have also increased slightly since yesterday now showing around 600 J/kg.
  24. Slow moving, and a lot out west heading in.
