Upstate NY Banter and General Discussion..
Syrmax replied to wolfie09's topic in Upstate New York/Pennsylvania
Wouldn't shock me... although...Cuomo is in enough hot water that I think he will be hesitant so as not to piss off the 5 people in the state that still think he's not megalomaniacal and has done a good job with C19. Disclaimer: there are 'others' who have actually performed far worse... -

Yeah, there's not a vax for children yet, which does give one pause, although how many children live in MS? Statistically, these cases seem like bugdust at this point. That state also has a quite low vax rate among its adult pop as i recall. For a few reasons... -

As far as we know Delta is not a "problem" for the vaxxed or those that have actually had C19 and have developed natural immunity. It does seem to be more contagious but jury is out on more deadly. There's no clear data that vaxxed people would transmit it even if they contract the virus as they remain largely asymptomatic with lower viral loads. Cases are up but it's among the unvaxxed. At this point, I'd suggest that people either get vaxxed or stay home. For those feeling vulnerable, for reasons real, or imagined, they can stay home and/or practice distancing. Not a fan of the vaxxed being required to mask up again and/or reimposition of mandatory business restrictions. I'm looking at Overseas (europe) travel in Sept but haven't pulled trigger yet out of fear of a rug pull in terms of entry requirements etc. Seems to be a fluid landscape. And, I seem to recall CDC data that indicated the worst C19 outcomes (hospitalizations, death) are vastly skewed to obese people and those that have certain health conditions, while healthy and/or younger people have much less trouble with it. Not unlike flu susceptibility really. The US media paints a distorted picture of reality on this, for the usual reasons. Even the NYT's Covid reporter called the media out on this a while back. -
Cell is going just to my north in So. Oswego County. The Downdrafts are killing the Sizzle though.

Thunder now...could be a good one incoming.

The Sizzle will not be denied!!

I'm guessing that most NWSFO's have a lot of "routine" tasks to perform daily, getting products ready, discussions, monitoring for sig weather, conf calls, dealing with HR etc etc. I could easily see where something like this could go unnoticed for quite a while, unless it was really anomalous (like a failed high/low instrument reading). It's not like highly trained and busy mets/techs have nothing else to do but stare at random temperature readings across their WFO and run comps with other data. Detecting a sensor that has "drifted" a few degrees would probably require comparison with similar/nearby sensors (that are reliable), or some sort of monitoring algorithm that would flag trends etc., or have a redundant sensor for comparison (but even that might not pick up drift if the cause is not the instrument itself). Seems easy but in practice...quite tricky and potentially complex / $$ . KSYR temp today looks pretty much in-line with local area readings, at least by a quick look at WeatherUnderground display.

Interesting subject, writ large. This has been one of the hot button issues in the world of climate study for decades. Instument and loop calibration programs and frequency thereof, changing environments around sensors, data extrapolation over wide areas etc, are controlled to widely varying standards (to put it charitably) globally. Without being inside baseball, so to speak, we have no way of knowing what the level of uncertainty is around any particular instrument especially over long periods. Studies have been done that attempt to address this, and i assume are still being conducted, with satellite data thrown in the mix. It does give one pause in regards to data quality contentions, at least for those of us that are experienced with such issues in the engineering field. If we find bias errors in relatively "advanced" countries with some frequency, doesn't really give a warm fuzzy regarding that temp sensor record in Outer Mongolia.

I was golfing out at Wayne Hills today and it was steamy. Maybe up to 80F but humidity quite noticeable with the "sort of" sunshine.

Where the Sizzle?? My garden is 6" of mud. Had to pound tomato stakes in deeper as they were leaning over. Picked some squash b4 it got too big, up to my ankles in mud.

Glad you had a great time! I shouldn't have been a Debbie Downer there. I blame the rain. Which BTW, I am up to 1.75" for yday and today and still pouring here. FFS.

Beers at German football matches are $3.50. Tix are ~$30 (upper levels). Mass Transit to stadiums free with ticket. Brats are $2. Similar in other non UK countries. They actually care a bit about the fan base. We get raped here by greedy ****tards. I'll never go to a major league US/Canadian sporting event again. On principle. Hey look, it's pouring again! Ugh.

We need some Sizzle to evaporate this rain. Give me some Portland heat!

Storming the grounds as at Wembley Stadium last Sunday for the England-Italy Euro Championship final?
-
That bolt looks like it was right into my office window from when i used to work there. That seemed like a nightly thing though... caused by upper management sweating the load...

Is the front thru? Are the days of rain over? I have golf this eve so hoping it clears out in Oswego County at least.

Same here...pouring rain from brief shower. I can see blue sky nearby. When did I move to Florida? 5.66" rain for July as of this a.m. and we've had a couple tenths so far today. Guessing we'll be at 6" by tomorrow...
-
Yeah, I've noticed a bit of blossom rot on a few squash plants. Thinking that is due to the wetness. Tomatoes and eggplant, peppers ok though so far.
-
We had a downpour, only 0.21" from it. I feel cheated. Maybe we make it up later. We need the rain.
-
Feels like it here. DP has to be mid 70s. Dripping wet doing anything outside. Feels like Florida here in Sizzletown.
-
Sizzle Sizzle is back today! Enough of these 70s for high temps. I have a pool that needs sizzling.
-
I remember that storm when it passed through here, prior to spinning up the tornado. It "felt" like it meant business...
-
I've tallied 4.00" of rain for July so far. 0.65" yday. The total for the month of June was 2.88". Pool is full. It is a shame that there isn't a way to get extra rainfall routed to the western US. I'm surprised Elon Musk hasn't proposed some new hair brained scheme to do this. Or maybe he has and I've missed it.

Hancock field (KSYR) has their thermometer in jet exhaust plumes just to annoy *certain people*

I heard some thunder also, but not that much. Hopefully this bit of rain tonight sets us up for a big hot steamer tomorrow!
