  1. KBGM AFD snip... Models continue to indicate a lull in the snow this afternoon across our southern zones as a dry slot to the south of the warm front advances northward. There is high confidence that the dry slot makes it into NEPA and moderate confidence that it progresses farther north into the Southern Tier of NY by mid afternoon. This dry slot will cut down on snowfall totals and help to minimize travel impacts for the evening commute. Farther north across CNY, light snow will continue through the afternoon. The peak of the event (in terms of snowfall rates and travel impacts) looks to be this evening in CNY. Hires models show a decent signal for mesoscale banding just to the NW of the surface low this evening. Good agreement of the guidance wrt development, position and timing of this heavier snow band adds to the confidence in the forecast. Snowfall rates of 1"/hr to perhaps up to 2"/hr locally are possible for several hours at any location underneath this band. The snow tapers quickly tapers off from W to E across the area late this evening and into the overnight.
  2. I took a 757 back from PHX to JFK last Monday, Presidents’ Day...we left almost an hour late but made up the time in flight with a 165 mph jet tailwind. Only took about 3:30 IIRC. Made our connecting flight into SYR, till that plane had mechanical issues after we boarded...but we deplaned and Delta got another plane for the flight fortunately.
  3. I didnt check daily data but doubtful KSYR had more than 3 or 4" based on drive by to work this a.m.
  4. I'd stick with 10:1 maps and figure we get 12:1 max. Too many things have to align to get Kuchera fantasy numbers usually.
  5. I have a graduated cylinder that came with the rain gauge / collector. So...fill the rain gauge tube and measure carefully, then pour in warm water to melt the snow in the cylinder. When its all melted, measure everything in the graduated cylinder again and subtract out what you added. Sometimes I'll add 2 graduated cylinders. So if I add say, 0.90" water twice to melt the snow, ill subtract out the 1.80" of water I added from the final total. Just have to be careful to not spill or mismeasure. Better than waiting for it to melt....
  6. I just measured...7.8" and 0 36" melted. We were on the fringe of the heavy stuff till the wee hours. And whatever fell during the day was blown away...I'll take it
  7. This sucks, have to get to bed and it is going nuts in northern Clay. Easily 2"/hr rate. Not sure how long this will last but I can barely see my shed 500 feet behind house the past half hour plus
  8. I'll have to measure out front tomorrow or in a couple of spots. I'm showing 4.5" here on my board out back, which doesnt make sense. Been snowing for a solid 7 hrs since I've been home, not including what fell earlier in the day, which may have blown off. I suppose at 1/2"/hr or so that number makes sense but I'd say that's been a minimum rate. And we didnt have 0 during the day.
  9. Band is strengthening a bit again after looking slightly weaker for a while. Pretty good action here now.
  10. Could be interesting measuring tomorrow a.m. my official spot only has 3 5" as of now but I'm sure a lot blew around today. I think most of that has fallen this evening.
  11. Definately best Fake Snow event of the season here.
  12. Moderate snow now under this band. Wind has died down so maybe a chance at some accumulation if its hangs around a while.
  13. I'd say 2 maybe 3" here north if Rt.31. It's not that bad. I drove Verplank Rd. Snow is drifted up so who knows. Snow intensity is not consistent, which will probably keep accumulations down under 6" total. Looks better across the river in Oswego cty.
  14. heading home from the 'Cuse now. We'll see how entertaining this gets.
  15. Hey that's near my house. Lots of open fields, probably drifting there. Different world here in the City. Occasional SN- and flurries. Yawn.
  16. Just occasional SN- downtown Syracuse. Windy though. Enjoy the Blizz up north! Probably a trace to 1/2" on gnd here.
  17. Windy here. Some snow, maybe a 1/2-1" accumulation. Not getting why KBGM thinks there will be 6-8" of snow here, but whatevs.
  18. Windy here of course but nothing too extreme, just north of KSYR. A few showers and maybe flurries by now but that’s been it. Haven’t lost power so that’s a plus,
  19. Agreed. We've seen this before with high wind LES. Seems to underperform unless you are pretty far from the lake and get some elevation lift (Tug and hills S&E of SYR).
  20. I was in a cabin in the southern edge of the ADKs in the forest by a pond when the Labor Day Derecho blew thru in the wee hours of the a.m. Cabin had a bit of a basement...and we got into it...That was one impressive storm...
  21. How far from Niantic River waterfront are you? Trying to confirm that a friend's sandbagging me in a friendly wager for Niantic this storm. My old stomping grounds.
