I think we also rush the season more and more. So when we get a May of warmth we almost come to expect it. But look up some of those Mays and early Junes of the past and it looks drastically different from this year.
I imagine them all gathering together this evening, looking out toward the western sky, as he informs them the sun is setting to the right about as far as it will go.
I get a handful of days every spring where we hold the fog and overcast until 12-2pm and then we break out into sun and still end up realizing 80-90% of our potential high temp. However the tall trees to my west start shading my fruit trees around 2-3pm so they end up with a high of 80° and only an hour or two of direct sunlight. Also my soil tends to retain moisture so that reduces the temperature ranges of the subsurface.
My parents have one that lays eggs in their mulch every summer. At some point in August they all start hatching and walking over the yard and crossing the road. They collect them up and bring them out into the woods to the swamp. They usually have over a dozen hatch every season.
