Goes to show how important deep pack is. My 4" depth is 33F and 8" depth 34F.

He’ll be back in time for growing season

My criteria is a blend of my old winter weenie ways and what’s good for my birds and plants. So basically not too cold, a decent pack to insulate the ground, and then maybe a 2 week stretch of deeper winter with a good storm in there. So you can check all of those boxes off. I would probably have preferred a little less QPF this winter, but you can’t have it all. I don’t like the big cold anymore, but I used to weenie out over it so if it’s going to be brutal at least make the airmass record breaking. So another check mark there. Yeah it has sucked a bit south of here, but I’ve seriously been enjoying it up here. The snow banks are still really damn high as of this morning. It’s a deep winter look.

I’d have to rate this winter an A+ so far. 2 11”+ events, a deep pack the past couple of weeks, a warm and snowy January, and a brief record cold airmass to start Feb.

21° here and 34° for Gene. This should mix out quickly this morning.

Sun is finally out. 34.5

24°

A slow, agonizing crawl to 16°. Southerly winds please.
-
11° Finally getting a peek of sun. Mix this crap out please.

I like getting my sleep and waking up to actual snow.

Red is the analysis temp by MADIS of what was expected for MPV the last 36 hours. They’re running solidly 5-10° warm there. I see no reason why they should stray so far from their analysis temp given their geography and the strong CAA/mixing we had.

-0.5/21 at 1pm Not too bad out there with slightly diminishing winds and full sun.

They’re still separate sensors IIRC.

Christmas 1980 really flies under the radar with the cheap midnight high. 18° at 5z for CON, 0° at 8z, and -15° at 12z. Then eating dinner at 2pm with an afternoon high of -8°. Then it briefly went calm the following night and they reported -25° although for some reason the ob looks discounted and -19° went in the books.

There was something about this that gave it more bite though. The low dews and wind made any exposed skin feel like it was starting to freeze instantly. I’ve had snotcicles many times before, but I was getting them last night before I even started breathing in. Shorter period of record for FIT, but this almost ran the 24hr record low dew gamut.

I have my stove on the opposite side of the house from the bedrooms. It’s tough to get the heat down the hallway to the other side. The living room is a toasty 75 though.

Pretty much the coldest overnight in BOS going back to at least 1943 (not sure if Feb 43 is in this dataset) although Jan 57 surpassed this toward the sunrise hours. Impressive.

Cougars with pickles?

ART went briefly calm and hit -33°. If the region was theoretically calm under this airmass we’d be in the -30s and -40s. (Up here with pack anyway)

Damn. Did it get any or was it trying to find a way in? Haven’t seen one here yet, but obviously they’re around.
