  1. 15 here with mostly clear skies. Coldest of the season this weekend but dry. Moderate 1/22-23 before much warmer 1/24 - 1/28 - could push some records. Moderate back towards normal by momth end and open of Feb.

Peak of cold later today - Sun a bit moderated from initial forecasted assumptions but still lower teens perhaps some single digits inland and teens near/in the metro. Moderate 1/22 - 1/30 before next trough and cold pushes in and through the region to close the month and open Feb. Beyond there ride near normal back and forth.

The heavy snow blocked roads, closed schools, and sunk six vessels in the Valdez harbor under the heavy snow’s weight. Three to four inches was a typical amount reported from many of the northeast Georgia counties.

During the several weeks from January 15 to February 29, approximately 1,300 cars with a total weight of 10,000 tons were hauled across the river from Havre de Grace, Maryland, to Perryville, Maryland. 1852 - Between January 15th and February 24th a total of 1378 railroad cars were drawn by horses across the frozen Susquehanna River to engines waiting at Havre De Grace, MD. The Los Angeles Civic Center reported an inch of snow, and even the beaches of Santa Monica were whitened with snow, in what proved to be a record snowstorm for Los Angeles. In addition, 24 hour snowfall totals of 22 inches at the University of Nevada, and 26 inches at Arco ID, established records for those two states. From the weather station at the USC campus in downtown LA, the high temperature was 79 degrees, and the low was 51. There was a light west wind. 1972: In Flint, Michigan, the daytime temperature rose to only -3 degrees. This is the second coldest maximum temperature recorded in the city of Flint since 1921. Detroit's high temperature was zero. 1987 - A powerful storm over the Southern Plateau and the Southern Rockies produced 24 inches of snow at Colorado Springs CO, including 22 inches in 24 hours, a January record. High winds in the southwestern U.S. gusted to 65 mph in the Yosemite Valley of California. The northern mountains of Utah were buried under 17 to 35 inches of snow while the mountains of southern Utah received another 12 to 16 inches. Light snow later tonight and overnight into Tuesday. 1 - 3 (storm thread). Overall cold 1/15 - 1/23. Cold peaks 1/19 - 1/21 - single digits inland / lower teens metro perhaps colder. We'll see if a wave can develop as trough deepens next weekend and the Arctic air arrives. Moderation 1/23 and into the last week of the month could be above - much above normal in the period.

Three feet of snow fell in Campo over four days and produced 8-foot drifts in spots. More than 200 pioneers perished in the storm. Subzero temperatures and mountainous snow drifts killed tens of thousands of cattle. The blizzard killed 235 people, many of whom were children on their way home from school, across the Northern Plains. 1890: A tornado touched down at St. Louis, Missouri, and crossed the Mississippi River, ending just south of Venice. The worst damage from this tornado occurred in St. Louis. Further east and northeast, one tornado in McLean County passed through downtown Cooksville, destroying at least a dozen buildings, while a tornado in Richland County destroyed four homes northeast of Olney. The tornado, which touched down about 100 miles southwest of town, killed 55 people and injured 113 others along its track. 1918 - A tremendous blizzard completely immobilized the Midwest, stopping mail service for two weeks. The vast storm then moved through the Great Lakes Region and the Ohio Valley. Winds reached 60 mph at Toledo OH, and the temperature plunged from 28 above to 15 below zero during passage of the cold front. In far southeastern Alabama, an estimated F3 tornado virtually damaged every building in the town of Webb. The tornado leveled one rural school, killing one teacher and seven students. Please note, the date on the historical marker is an error. January 10th in 1918 was a Thursday. 1963: An F2 tornado was reported in Scott County, Indiana, north of Louisville, Kentucky. It was on the ground for 5 miles north of Scottsburg and damaged or destroyed several homes and barns. 1972 - Downslope winds hit the eastern slopes of the Rockies in northern Colorado and southeastern Wyoming. Boulder CO reported wind gusts to 143 mph and twenty-five million dollars property damage. Very cold 1/19 - 1/22 period and we'll see with the sharp trough if we can spin up a low. Looks to moderate towards the end of the month.

Busy pattern next up of the duet is Sat with rain / winds before much colder air comes in 1/15. The storm 1/16-17 details to be worked out on track and if its more rain or some snow perhaps similar to last weekend 1/6 storm. Overall colder through 1/23 storm timing and tracks the caveat on snowfall and pattern delivery. Core of upcming Cold 1/17-18 , 1/20 -22.
