Records: Highs: EWR: 93 (2002) NYC: 96 (1976) NYC: 91 (1976) Lows: EWR: 32 () NYC: 25 (1875) LGA; 35 (2014) Historical: 1880 - More than two dozen tornadoes were reported from Kansas and Arkansas to Wisconsin and Michigan. More than 100 persons were killed, including 65 persons at Marshfield MO. (David Ludlum) 1906 - A severe earthquake shook San Francisco, and unusual easterly winds spread fires destroying the city. (David Ludlum) At 5:12 AM, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake hits San Francisco. A devastating fire soon broke out in the city and lasted for several days. About 3,000 people died, and over 80 percent of San Francisco was destroyed. 1944 - California experienced its worst hailstorm of record. Damage mounted to two million dollars as two consecutive storms devastated the Sacramento Valley destroying the fruit crop. (The Weather Channel) 1957 - A dust devil near Dracut MA lifted a small child three feet into the air, and rolled two other children on the ground. Fortunately none of the three were hurt. The dust devil was accompanied by a loud whistling sound as it moved westward. (The Weather Channel) 1970 - Rapid City, SD, received a record 22 inches of snow in 24 hours. (17th-18th) (The Weather Channel) 1987 - Thirty-one cities in the central U.S. reported record high temperatures for the date, including International Falls MN with a reading of 88 degrees, and Bismarck ND with a high of 92 degrees. A sharp cold front produced high winds in the western U.S. Winds in Utah gusted to 99 mph at the Park City Angle Station, and capsized a boat on Utah Lake drowning four persons. A thunderstorm in Pecos County of southwest Texas produced wind gusts to 90 mph at Imperial.   2. down to 47 and now ba breezy 53. Cooler today before warming Wed (4/19) towards normal (64/45). Thu (4/20) through Sat (4/22) much warmer mid 70s to low perhaps mid 80s in the warmer spots Fri. Sat comes down to arrival of clouds. Sun (4/23) looks very wet as system rides the front. Could be wettest day since Feb 27. Beyond that cooler Mon 4/24 through much of next week. Next rain chances the middle of next week perhaps more meaningful rain to wash the pollen accumulation away.

A post card, picked up in Madison County IN, was found 124 miles away near Mount Cory OH. (The Weather Channel) 1942: West Palm Beach, FL was soaked by 8.35 inches of rain in just two hours. 1953 - One of the few severe hailstorms accompanied by snow, sleet, glaze, and rain, pelted parts of Kay, Osage, Creek, Tulsa, Washington, and Rogers Counties in northeastern Oklahoma late in the day. Nearly 10,000 insurance claims were filed. (The Weather Channel) 1965 - The Mississippi River reached a flood crest at Saint Paul MN four feet higher than any previous mark. During the next two weeks record levels were reached along the Mississippi between Saint Paul and Hannibal MO. Flooding caused more than 100 million dollars damage, but timely warnings kept the death toll down to just twelve persons. Temperatures warmed into the 70s and 80s from the High Plains Region to the Mississippi Valley, with readings in the low 90s reported in the Southern Plains Region. Tulsa OK hit 92 degrees. Unseasonably cold weather prevailed in the north central U.S. Valentine NE was the cold spot in the nation with a record low of 10 degrees.   4. Low of 53 now up to 64 and sunny skies. Cooler Tue before warming back Wed (4/19) and Thu (4/20) and a much warmer Fri (4/21). Front this weekend could bring rain Sat (4/22). Beyond there cut off low into the NE could keep it cooler than previously forecast for the remainder of the month.

  6. 0.20 in the bucket here in CNJ, missed the much heavier rains to the north by 5-10 miles. 58 and now 60. Low clouds will be slow to urn but should be full sun by the afternoon and shoot temps to near / low 70s. Front comes through Mon (4/17) with more showers before a cooler Tue (4/18) and Wed (4/19). Brief warm up Thu (4/20) - Fri (4/21) and with full sun perhaps a stray 80 or so. Next front and chance for rain comes next weekend Sat (4/22). Cooler period 4/23 - 4/27 overall last 10 days near normal. Not looking very wet overall either. Strong warmth looks to subside outside warmer days Thu/FRo this week for a week or so.

(The Weather Channel) 1958 - A tornado 300 yards in width skipped along a five mile path near Frostproof FL. A 2500 gallon water tank was found one mile from its original position (it is not known how much water was in the tank at the time). A tornado killed one person and injured seven others near Mount Dora FL. Drifts of hail up to two feet deep were reported in Davidson and Rowan counties in North Carolina. An additional 62 tornadoes touched down in Arkansas, Kentucky, and Tennessee. These tornadoes caused 12 fatalities and approximately 120 injuries. 2000: What a difference a day made (with the help of a strong cold front). Yesterday's 86 degrees in Goodland, Kansas, tied the record high for the date. Today's high of 29 degrees was also a date record high, but a record low high. It was a new record by 3 degrees.

Gale force winds blew the wet snow into massive drifts, however there were few deaths due to the sparse population and due to the gradual increase of the storm. (David Ludlum) 1886 - A devastating tornado, 800 yards in width at times, cut a twenty mile path through Saint Cloud MN killing 74 persons. The bottom of the Mississippi River was said to have been seen during the tornado's crossing. Eleven persons were killed at a wedding party near the town of Rice. (David Ludlum) (The Weather Channel) 1912: On her maiden voyage, the RMS Titanic rammed into an iceberg just before midnight. The "unsinkable ship" sank two hours and forty minutes later into the icy water of the Atlantic Ocean near Newfoundland, Canada. Tragically, 1,517 passengers including the crew were lost. A nearby ship, the Carpathia, rushed to the Titanic and was able to save 706 people. 1922: The Mississippi River reached a record height of 21.3 feet at New Orleans, Louisiana, and the river was still rising, with the crest still a week away. Understandably, the City of New Orleans was nervous as reports of levees failing upriver reached the city. A crevasse below New Orleans would relieve the pressure on the town's strained levees on the 27th, spared the city from disaster. 1935: Black Sunday refers to a particularly severe dust storm that occurred on April 14, 1935, as part of the Dust Bowl. During the afternoon, the residents of the Plains States were forced to take cover as a dust storm, or "black blizzard," blew through the region. The storm hit the Oklahoma Panhandle and Northwestern Oklahoma first and moved south for the remainder of the day. It hit Beaver around 4:00 p.m., Boise City around 5:15 p.m., and Amarillo, Texas, at 7:20 p.m. The conditions were the most severe in the Oklahoma and Texas panhandles, but the storm's effects were felt in other surrounding areas. 1987 - A storm system moving slowly northeastward across the Middle Mississippi Valley produced severe thunderstorms which spawned three tornadoes around Ottumwa IA, and produced up to four inches of rain in southeastern Nebraska, flooding rivers and streams. Rain-slickened roads resulted in numerous accidents in southern California, including a ten car pile-up at Riverside. More clouds than yesterday but more mid/upper 80s and some isolated 90s in the CNJ-NE-NJ /MYC metro corridor, unless more clouds get in the way later during the afternoon. Cloudy wet weekend (showers) as Gulf systems pushes up the EC. Mon (4/17) looks a bit wetter as front slows throughs the area and much cooler Mon (4/17) - Tue (4/18). Warm back up by Wed (4/19) with building support for a 2 day stronger warmth by Thu (4/20) and Fri (4/21). Back and forth but overall bias warm the last 10 days of the month.
