  1. The "dry tongue" over DTW was very evident on radar. Just a shame such a robust system goes in the books as rather ordinary.
  2. In recent years the warming nights in summer are by far the most noticeable factor locally. We still get the occasional cool summer night, but not nearly with frequency we used to. I attribute it to increasing humidity, as the extreme summer maxes are way down the past few decades save for a few years, despite overall hot summers. The 30 year averages at Detroit show no clear cut trend re: max or min warming more than the other, esp with the 1960s-70s-80s cold dip. WINTER 1881-1910: 32.3 / 20.0 1891-1920: 31.5 / 19.3 1901-1930: 32.1 / 19.6 1911-1940: 33.2 / 20.5 1921-1950: 34.0 / 21.2 1931-1960: 34.3 / 21.6 1941-1970: 33.6 / 20.8 1951-1980: 33.1 / 19.7 1961-1990: 32.8 / 18.6 1971-2000: 33.9 / 19.7 1981-2010: 34.5 / 20.9 1991-2020: 35.1 / 21.7 SUMMER 1881-1910: 78.9 / 61.0 1891-1920: 79.0 / 61.3 1901-1930: 78.9 / 61.3 1911-1940: 80.2 / 61.7 1921-1950: 80.9 / 61.7 1931-1960: 81.7 / 61.7 1941-1970: 81.3 / 61.1 1951-1980: 81.3 / 60.2 1961-1990: 81.2 / 59.8 1971-2000: 81.3 / 60.4 1981-2010: 81.4 / 61.6 1991-2020: 81.9 / 62.6
  3. Afternoon temps in the 60s with stiff northwest winds absolutely gave a taste of Fall today!
  4. Thanks for clearing that up. 1886-87, 1926-27, 1933-34, 1995-96, 2005-06, 2010-11, & 2020-21. Not a bad dataset at all!
  5. After missing almost everything this summer, got soaked with 3.48" in a 20 hour period. DTW was dryslotted and only got 1.31"
  6. So to clarify, that would be winters: 1885-86, 1925-26, 1932-33. 1994-95, 2004-05, 2009-10, & 2019-20?
  7. The 2017-18 winter avg temp at Buffalo was 27.0F, which is 0.9F colder than avg using 1991-20 normals, and 0.4F colder than average using the 1981-10 normals. ****** Side note about 2017-18 here. It was an excellent winter snow-wise, snowcover wise, and also saw the longest sub-20F stretch on record for Detroit. Every month from Nov 2017 thru Apr 2018 was colder than avg except Feb. And even, Feb was memorable for its frequent and deep snow, and was running below avg temp wise through the 18th…then a monster warm spell happened the last 9 days of the month. The 9 days, which averaged around +14F above avg, completely erased Febs temp departure and made it a +3F month, which made the winter as a whole finish only around a degree below avg, whereas winter thru Feb 13th was running a solid 3.5F colder than avg
  8. Last colder than avg winter for Buffalo was 2017-18. However, it was the only 1 of the previous 9 winters that was colder than average (1 other winter, 2018-19, was very close to avg). However, 8 of the 13 winters prior to that were colder than average. In Detroit we only have to go back to 2021-22 to find a colder than avg winter. Only 2 of our past 9 winters were colder than average (and another 2 were very close to average) but 9 of the 13 winters prior to that were colder than average. Im feeling good about the upcoming winter here, esp snow-wise. El Nino to La Nina transition is normally just what the snow lover ordered in the Great Lakes. It usually comes with some rainstorms and aggravating snowpack-depleting thaws, but Ninas are rarely boring winters.
  9. It was pretty much as I expected. Hot, very humid, and miserable, but it's intensity way overblown by some of the media.
  10. DTW peaked at 88 today, so the consecutive say streak ends at 4, although tomorrow will be in the 90s too. Mon- 95 Tue- 90 Wed- 91 Thu- 92 Fri- 88
  11. Unfortunately it did. It was cloudy ALL day, so i thought, its not TOO bad with the clouds, so I went to my nephews baseball game. Sure enough, as we are headed there at 530pm, the overcast thins and the sun comes out
  12. According to TCC, DTW has a de-urban cold island effect.
  13. Good point. Although Toledo does seem to usually run hotter than us (and obviously, its further south lol).
  14. DTW hit 90° today. Thinking cool with this June/January comparison shot
  15. Cold island effect . The high yesterday at DTW was 95F, with closeby stations maxing at 94F at YIP at 92F at ARB. The high of 91F on 6/16/24 ended a streak of 679 days where the temp did not get hotter than 90F. This was the 11th longest on record and 5th longest in the last 100 years.
  16. It's insane to see that in 2023, Minneapolis hit 90+ a total of 33 times, their 5th highest on record. Meanwhile Detroit hit 90 just 2 times, the max being just 90, lowest since 1915.
  17. DTW hit 91 today. The hottest temperature last year was 90, so today was the hottest since 91 on Sept 4, 2022. After the early Fall like temps this week and absence of heat last year, next week will feel brutal.
  18. Im not sure, its not as easy for me to find Canadian data as US data lol.
  19. Average last freeze is: 150-year avg: April 24th 1991-2020 avg: April 21st Dont have an exact stat on last frost, but if you go by frost with temp of 37F or lower, then the avg last frost is: 150-year avg: May 10th 1991-2020 avg: May 7th Detroit finished 18th least snowy since 1880 with 23.5" (for reference, you are using the mid 1930s, this would be the 15th least since 1935). Definitely a winter to forget, but cant say we werent due for an unusually low snow year. It happens.
  20. From the 20s and dry air to 80 and humid in 3 days.
  21. Timing is important. Record lows the first 2/3 of April are generally in the teens, then they jump to the mid to upper 20s the last 3rd of April. This year trees are about 10 days ahead of normal so last nights conditions (temps 20s, dews upper teens to low 20s) can really harm fruit trees. Its not so much an issue with potted plants because nobody should have planted anything yet. Though we did not have anything to show other than a trace on the 21st this year, frequency of post-April 15th snow has been at an all time high the last ~15 years.
  22. What does showing the coldest Aprils on record (1874 over 10F colder than avg) have to do with noting the unusual nature of this mornings cold? The record low was missed by 2F and again, as pointed out, the dewpoints were unusually low. Im well aware of the planting guidelines (they say Mothers Day, not Memorial Day) but theres little you can do with trees established in the ground. This marks the 5th consecutive year that the last freeze was later than avg 2024 (Apr 25) 2023 (Apr 26) 2022 (Apr 29) 2021 (May 1) 2022 (May 13) *only May 10, 1966 saw a colder temp so late in the season than the 27F on May 9, 2020).
  23. I covered my apple trees. Not an easy feat lol. If it happens next spring I may just run the sprinkler. DTW got down to 28F, missing the record low (26- 1892) by 2F. White Lake got to 23F. What was unusual about this is that most late spring frosts/freezes have dews near the temp, but we saw temps in the 28-29F range while dews were 20-22F. Very unusual, albeit brief, for late April.
