October Discussion: Bring the Frost-Hold the Snow
snowman21 replied to 40/70 Benchmark's topic in New England
For the purpose of watches and warnings, the season is over once you hit a certain date regardless of if it's really over. -

The growing season is over in much of the northern half of the country. -

You guys know the state has hundreds of cameras set up all over where you can go and look live at the trees if you really want some ground truth. Here's a link to check them out for yourselves: https://cttravelsmart.org/cctv?start=0&length=10&order[i]=0&order[dir]=asc -
I was hoping he'd come back a little stronger. Then you trade him in the off-season when he has value.

The upcoming cooler air mass is pretty average. A true cold blast this time of year would produce a morning with lows in the 20s all the way to the coast, and I'm not sure we'll even see widespread 30s to the coast in the next 7-10 days let alone a freeze. -

Next Sat-Sun-Mon he has 44/56, 39/56, and 37/57. 37 at BDL will be a freeze in the better radiating spots NW/NE, and a frost across a lot of the interior. -

Ryan's 10 day looks like next weekend will be the first legit shot at it. Wouldn't be surprised if some of the hill towns had frost Monday night though. -

I wish it were in the 10s/20s right now. With +SN of course. -
CT DMV is pretty nice now. Another good thing Gov. Lamont has quietly done after previous administrations fumbled time and time again. Can do most common stuff online, otherwise you make an appointment to go in person. I've heard mixed reviews about the appointments where some people say you're in and out at your designated time slot, and others have said they still had to wait 45 minutes to be seen. Have to admit being able to go online and in 3 minutes renew my license was pretty slick. $72 and 4 days later I had a brand new license good for the next 6 years in my mailbox.

Next ten days in general look AN. Maybe Monday clocks in a few degrees below. -
The only thing Biden has done so far is give (some of) us $1400 checks 10 months ago. Seems pretty unlikely that was the straw that broke the labor market and caused all this inflation.
-
The ACA was dramatically watered down to get it to pass Congress. It was never going to be the end all be all, just the starting point. Most first world nations have universal health care coverage for everyone. No more making mom and pop offer insurance or play games with hours or force people into bankruptcy to cover a medical emergency or forcing people to stay in a bad job because their health care for them and their kids is chained to it. We can't even get lower drug prices on par with our peers because the people in our government have all been bought off. The best investment corporations have ever made was in our Congress.
-
Only if you include the hours they drive for Door Dash and Uber. I wonder if the pizza place offers health insurance?

Nearly every economy on earth is a mix of socialism and capitalism. We are not unique other than the fact that corruption and bribery of government officials is legal here while in most other countries it is not. Until you fix that things are going to continue to spiral downward.
-
All of this is sleepy Joe Byden's fault ! This administration is just two weeks into its first fiscal year and already having all this inflation from trillion dollar infrastructure packages and labor shortages because of vaccine mandates that don't yet exist.
-
The U.S. already has socialism. Almost every country on earth does. I guess Americans just don't work as hard as our peers in other first world countries that have a substantially better quality of life. Get back to the fields and mines you lazy Americans ! Time to bring China's 996 work week to America.

All the cold is out west for now. Blizzard and winter storm warnings to freeze warnings in effect from the Canadian border all the way down to Mexico. -

I'd say it's more normal rather than cold. Next week normals are MU30s/U50s in the hills to 40-45/60-65 rest of state. -

I don't know what the rule is, but it happens every now and again where you'll never see a frost/freeze advisory/warning even if it's the first one, and the discussion always refers to the growing season being over even if not in reality. I'm not sure what cut off they use though for when they end the growing season. I doubt it's the 50th percentile (average) date, so maybe they take the 75th or 90th percentile date and call the season over at that point meaning no need to issue any sort of advisories. -

I mean you have to pick a 2m temp threshold since actual frosts aren't tracked officially. I guess 36F at 2m means a few degrees colder at ground level where plants might be? I've always assumed the 36/32/28 thresholds for which they publish normals were the frost/freeze/hard freeze thresholds for climate tracking purposes and weren't just randomly selected temp thresholds. -

CAR had their first frost (36F or lower) on 9/29, and CON had theirs on 10/1, but no freezes yet. Gonna be an easy frost/freeze program this year for the New England WFOs because by the time we have first frosts and freezes the growing season will officially be over. After this week all but 4 of the 22 climo sites in CT that have published frost/freeze normals will be past their average first freeze date, so I imagine northern New England is weeks behind schedule. -
Some of you guys should be photographers. My pics never come out that nice.

Don't the towns just come by and suck the leaves up? A lot of towns in Connecticut have curbside leaf pickup. You just pile them up along the side of the road and a truck with a big hose comes along and sucks them up and takes them to where ever they take them to be disposed.
