Run after run the models insist on some sloppy snow for the hills and mountains of NNE. Not that unusual for May 14th but fun to see. If we are going to have a rain storm and temps in the upper 30's and low 40's we might as well have some snow.
Regarding extreme weather I like it. A few years back when I got my 3in Memorial Day thunder snow I was in heaven. I'll take that in a Flash over 80 degree sunny day. Like PF said cold rain is the worst and to get into one of those spring blocks when we have 7 days of cold and raw is even worse. As long as snow doesn't do tree damage early next week bring it on it won't last just something interesting.
Early next week continues to look very miserable. Cold rain mixed with cat paws. Snow in higher elevations. Looks like going to have to fire up the wood stove yet again.
Leafout continues in my area of Central NH. Forest canopy is just about ready to explode with green but it has been another slow week of progress. Usually, by mid May I'm pretty much leafed out so definitely behind this year. Should fall further behind through next week before any warm weather arrives at the end of the week.
Cloudy, light off and on rain today, low 50's. Was hoping for a few hours of warmth before cool air moves in for the rest of the week but that was a fail. Enjoy the great day southerners
Heading back north. Real change of leaf out is around NH/MA line
Just glanced at Euro on the phone. About 4" /5" of birchbender snow for me next week? Getting late in the season but can still happen up here at least.
Passenger in the car today for the 350 mile round robin trip from Central NH to Fall river and back. So nice to see green up in E Mass true spring. Clearing coming SW off ocean should b a great afternoon for most
Dim sun today, living on the edge
Birch popped small leaves the past 2 days, aspen too. This is the week everything really starts to open. My guess is first lawn cut later this week but boy is the soil wet.
A mistake I sometimes see with people putting down grass seed is that they just sprinkle it on top or lightly rake it in. A thin coating of top soil over the grass seed and keeping it moist without letting it dry out goes a long way. Soil temperature really helps too.
Just starting here too. Dave, Im surprised your not further along as your 75 miles further south. Tomorrow we have to drive down to Fall River Mass. Will be nice to see spring in full force.
Dim sun up here this AM. Black flies have not come out just yet
Absolutely no leaf out here. Yet a trip just 25 miles south towards Brian and the Norways and Forsythia are in bloom.
Another 40ish day. At least no complaints about my pond not being full
A friend of mine took his snowmobile up to the Canadian border and had surprisingly good sledding weather. He posted a bunch of pictures and it looks like the ground is still all snow covered.
In keeping with the NNE gore animal theme he also posted this picture. I don't know if the moose was hit by a sled and died on the trail and was then eaten or if coyotes or something got to him/her first
Alex,
I've noticed that the forsythia here some years have a hard time flowering too except the lower parts. I think its because the shrubs can't take the super cold. The lower parts get covered up with snow before the way below zero weather sets in. That is my theory.
0% leaf out here but had to drive into Laconia this morning and such a change, just 25 miles SE and lower in elevation.
Can I score an inch of so of wet snow tonight? Models say should be something in the higher terrain from about me north..
I know down in Southern New England the forest canopy is leafing out. Up here it looks like late November. Other than green grass you would not know that it's spring. With this pattern I wonder how far we can get into May without Leaf out in Northern New England.
Well, feel good you fed the bear. Not much for them to eat right now until green up. The bears need the food more than the birds, just head back out and buy a couple of 50lb sacks of food.
Was at Home Depot in Tilton yesterday. Lots of annuals. Good marketing. Get them out early, let people think they can plant and then once the frost kills them rinse and repeat. Lots of extra $$. Planting in Central NH at the end of April for sensitive plants. Not a good idea
