PGCPS closed again tomorrow. I think from the current situation with roads and schools this little MECS that we had should probably be in the HECS category. I've been in the DC area, I can't ever recall county schools being closed this many days in a row. See posts online from a lot of Michigan and New England folks saying they've never experienced anything like this. They're used to snow, but are baffled by the snowcrete.

36F The individual ice chucks are now going to melt into big mountains of ice chunks that will still be around come June.

Me either. The only downside to this winter wonderland is that any outdoor sports are put on hold indefinitely. My son plays tennis and we usually practice when the temps are at least 40F+. But it's been over a week of subfreezing temps and all the outdoor courts are covered with snowcrete until April it seems.

At least the clouds will slow the melting.

PGCPS closed today. We drove by my daughter's school just yesterday afternoon and the entrance hadn't even been touched!

You guys have no idea how happy I am that my kids got to experience something I have never experienced myself. We went snow tubing on a local field that was at least 6 acres. Walking on the clean snowpack without our feet making footprints was wild! I'm 280lbs and I was literally running and my feet did not create footprints! And the tubing on the slickest surface ever? Kids loved it. The tube went fast and far. They could even slide down the hill on their butts! They laughed and had a good time. It is an awesome experience. If we don't get another inch, the last storm will create lasting memories which is good for any kid.

February 2026 Medium/ Long Range Discussion: Buckle Up!

At least we can imagine we keep getting snow since the snow from the last storm is still on the ground. I don't know. I'm grasping at any comfort right now. -

If this cold trend can continue, we have until mid-March for a big dog storm. We can even eke out flizzards in April. Though the snow cover may not hang around for a week. Great to have had a few snow events so early with winter only half over. -

I think it was partly due to the idea of snow on snow which is even more rare than a MECS. A lot of arctic cold is being wasted on clear dry days and we're marching towards sun angles and marginal temps every passing day. Still hard to believe we're still in Jan though. Lots of winter left. -
The Jan 31 Potential: Stormtracker Failure or 'Tracker Trouncing

Like I said, I'd be happy with 2. Or just 1. I just like watching it fall. The cold temps keeping it around for a few days is a bonus. -

I'd be happy with 2-4" to coat the existing browning snow we have. Should be enough to make the kids happy as Monday would certainly be another snow day. At this point, I just want snow TV. -

Didn't I read someone say that strong cyclones tend to move more N than forecast due to the earth's rotation or something like that? Some people mention land interaction, hugging the coast, etc. (re: like hurricanes). It may have not been in this forum. -

Waiting for those glorious words from a met, "I don't believe the models have a good handle on this." -

Watch it comes when we lose all this cold air and we'll be dealing with sun angles and marginal temps. -
Prince George's is closed until Friday.

Our neighborhood has not been plowed. Whole 5" + sleet is still covering the road. Went out last night to the grocery store to restock for potential snow this weekend and even with tire chains, it was difficult to get out.
-
This cold air is taking its sweet time. Back up to 29. I guess we need darkness to drop the temps.
-
Temps finally on the way back down. Got up to 30 here. Now 28.
-
I hope so. At 29F right now. lol It's like someone took out a hair drier. lol

Temps may rise above freezing at this rate. Forecast says 26. Already at 27 and rising.

January 24-26: Miracle or Mirage JV/Banter Thread!
adelphi_sky replied to SnowenOutThere's topic in Mid Atlantic
Quick question. Just thinking when is the best time to restock on food. If people hear the hint of another snow storm, the stores may have a small window of restocking before being ravaged again. Thinking that Tuesday may be the optimal time. Worst case, I do have tire chains if roads aren't that good yet. -
So, silly me, I shoveled the snow and figured I'd get to the sleet this morning. I'm 288lbs. My feet did not go through the 2 inches of sleet. So, ummm. Yeah. I'll throw some salt on it. See what happens later. But this stuff is no going anywhere. If temps get close to 30 degrees today, it will cause some melting but make everything even more supplely when it refreezes.

I'm old now. My memory is failing. lol. But it was one of those surprises.
