  1. That’s what makes me chuckle and shake my head somewhat, if anyone should be complaining about this winter to date it’s us mountain, and to a lesser extent, foothill folks, especially above 3000’ in the border counties. Beech and sugar are something like 40” behind average right now, we haven’t even had a legit “region wide” flow snow yet and the SW mountains have barely had anything. Looking objectively, we had cold sooner this season (October, November and December all had spells) as it took until this week last year to have any real cold temps looking back at my data from my weather station and the only region wide decent synoptic storm that wasn’t flow snow related didn’t occur until MLK weekend. Historically it’s been eh the past few years but this year is at least off to a better start compared to last year.
  2. I have a view of Cataloochee when headed out to the main highway after I get to the bottom of my mountain. Looks like some moisture is falling over that way, maybe @Maggie Ace can confirm.
  3. Hanging steady at 41, wet bulb is 35. Doubtful I’ll see anything more than some token flake but it could surprise me. I’d feel more comfortable if I was another 500’+ up in elevation though.
  4. Was wild up on the mountain when that rolled through.
  5. I can’t think of any other mountainous area in the lower 48 that has as varied weather over such short distances. This month alone I’ve seen it clear back towards Crabtree Bald, some clouds at my house coming over the top of the ridge and then the Buncombe side be socked in.
  6. Merry Christmas everyone. 5.5 at my house this morning.
  7. Parents have a busted pipe in Hickory, I’ve got faucets dripping while I’m gone but the way the pipe is ran in my home shouod keep any issues to a minimum as there is only one 5’ run of exterior wall pipe running and that’s for the hose bib and runs down the CMU block wall in the garage. Temp shot up quick, was 16 when I left at 11:30.
  8. Bottomed out at -6 sometime after midnight, at -3.5 currently
  9. -5’ at the house while I am in downtown Waynesville.
  10. Daytime high of 7 at 2 pm under full sun all day is impressive. The slide down has begun as my house has now dipped below 6 degrees. I think it would be a given but still wanna see if I go below zero tonight and how cold it will get; gut says -2 but I also thought I’d hit 0 this morning and came up short. Mid to upper teens down here in Waynesville.
  11. Surprised you are that warm. Down to 2.8 now, think I’m gonna stall out at 2 for the day but maybe I can make a a run at zero or below in the next hour. Wind sounds and looks brutal with those temps.
  12. Gorgeous @Buckethead! I’ve got .5-1” on the ground and clear skies. Wind comes and goes currently with the temp down to 4.5. To
  13. From 36.9 at 2:40 to 7.3 now. Getting a fire going and seeing how low I go. Looks like I’ve got a little snow too.
  14. Just got home, wind picking up at my place and 37 with light rain. Deer were bedded down at the bottom of my driveway, tells me they are anchored down and waiting.
  15. It’s your dang hollar up there, it’s where all the cold goes in Haywood haha. Think we are sitting pretty for a surprise, just hope I get home tonight before it happens!
  16. I’ve got rain in downtown Waynesville, 44 on the truck thermometer. 38 at the house in Crabtree.
  17. I’m down in Waynesville but my station is showing 40. Man if I hit -9 or 10 as modeled with this front, your place will be -15 I bet.
  18. Yea I think you and I probably should be thrilled to squeak out an inch.
  19. NWS has me for a low of zero tonight, 2 for the high tomorrow and -3 for Saturday morning. Don’t go back above freezing until sometime Tuesday per the point and click. There’s a strong possibility those of us above 3500’ could be single digits or below for 24 hours straight if the HRRR pans out or even “worse” and it’s on the high side.
  20. I’ve experienced a 45+ degree drop in less than 12 hours (I think it was like 8) in Ohio but that much in an hour is crazy. The fact we are about 30 hours away from experiencing a blue norther this far SE is historic. 0z HRRR shows me at -9 at 11:30 am Friday morning, I can’t wrap my head around if that were to verify.
  21. Saw a map earlier in the TN Valley sub forum showing forecast ratios in the range of 20-26” of snow per inch of liquid for all mountain counties. Potential for high ratio stuff is there if we get the moisture once the front blasts through.
