A post from reddit from a Northeast RN. ""An experience I had with one of them has completely reshaped how my brain thinks about food and life." I work as an RN in a rather densely populated suburban hospital in the Northeast US. A couple weeks ago, we started getting COVID-19 cases in my unit. All of these patients we considered "rule out", as in we literally didn't have the tests to swab them with so we were forced to assume they had the disease if they were showing symptoms. So far, the large majority of these patients were negative and sent home (Great News!). However, that doesn't mean we haven't had our share of positives. These patients can seem okay, but a smaller number of them can slowly deteriorate. I had experience with one of them. He was a rather healthy and active 40-ish year old male, slightly overweight, slightly hypertensive (high blood pressure). He was complaining of a little bit of sharp pain in his chest when breathing in. Otherwise, he was stable, we were just giving him a little oxygen. My next night with him, he was on a little more oxygen because his oxygen saturation started dropping, but otherwise stable. The next night, he couldn't breathe if he talked for more than a few sentences at a time (very bad sign), but again, still stable otherwise. In the back of my head I knew he going to deteriorate further and probably would need to be intubated and attached to a ventilator eventually. I gave him a breathing treatments with little effect, I increased his oxygen with little effect, but again, he was still stable. I informed the doctors of this so they were aware, but there was really nothing further we could do for him at that point as I had given him every appropriate medication and intervention. Close to the end of my shift his call light went off and I can hear him in the room absolutely gasping for air. Without even going in the room I called for a rapid response (the emergency team in the hospital). Mind you, it takes a solid 2 minutes just to get inside these rooms with all the PPE (e.g. gloves, gown, N95 mask, and face shield) we're required to wear. By the time I got in, his lips were blue, he's gasping for air, and absolutely begging to breathe normally. He was immediately intubated by the hospitalist and sent to the ICU. He's currently sedated, intubated, on a ventilator, and on a rotoprone bed (a bed that rotates you like a rotisserie chicken to move accumulated fluid in your lungs). I currently have no idea if he'll make it through this. -

Sometimes I wonder if that thing is accurate. It almost always shows bright green all winter up there. Any thoughts? I don't see it in other parts of Canada, despite them being colder then these locations. For instance northern Ottawa has 2 feet, southern Ottawa is green grass despite elevations being similar. -

Italys numbers are insane. *Italy’s Coronavirus Death Tolls Surpasses China’s *Italy Says 3,405 Infected People Have Died *41,000 People Have Tested Positive for the Virus in Italy so far 8.3% fatality rate. 2nd oldest country in the world is most likely the main cause, lots of smokers too. -

Meal prep services are still open around me. I've been buying a bunch of $5 meals and putting them in my freezer. I still have loads of frozen walleye I caught last summer. -

He says the unemployment website keeps crashing due to it being overloaded, unable to even apply for benefits. No one is prepared. I wonder if he will be able to afford the cobra payments to keep health insurance despite him having no control over his employment. -

My brother in law just got fired from West Herr as a direct result of this virus. We are heading towards a depression, not recession. Hope everyone has a 6 month-1 year emergency fund. -

2 Roswell park patients have it. If my mom got this virus last year while undergoing stage 4 cancer treatments she would of have been as good as dead. She currently is very ill and doesn't a have primary care doctor. We are in the process of trying to get her tested this week. https://www.wkbw.com/news/coronavirus/two-roswell-park-patients-test-positive-for-covid-19?fbclid=IwAR3nUdOiZrgoPtfWqCzXJdqJQRODqIhYW-j7t_wHRnT9VPlIqwNo92PN_Ag -

2 Cases in Hamburg NY. The County Executive has just informed me that there are two confirmed coronavirus cases in the Town of Hamburg. Two women, one of whom is in her 60s and resides in Blasdell has been diagnosed with COVID-19. The other is a younger woman in her 30s who resides within the Township of Hamburg. This sobering news is very concerning to all of us. We are likely to realize many more confirmed cases over the weeks ahead. Please maintain social distancing. To the extent that you can refrain from gatherings of 10 or more people. Our best hope is to take extra precautions in our day-to-day activities. I will keep you informed as new developments are given to me. Respectfully yours, James M. Shaw Supervisor, Town of Hamburg -

He's given 45 billion to charities to help global poverty. I don't know much about him but always thought he was the worlds greatest philanthropist. -

You knew something was serious when China built a emergency hospital in 10 days. Describes exactly what you put in those in China were spreading it for awhile. -

Medicaid is only for very poor people. Not all of those 27 million people are poor. I mean look at those income levels. I grew up very poor in the city with 2 working parents struggling just above min wage. They refused any type of social assistance, but could definitely have used some help. They had to sell nearly every possession they had (including my moms engagement ring) to pay for my medical bills as a kid. (I had loads of issues as an infant) https://www.medicaidplanningassistance.org/medicaid-eligibility-new-york/ -

I guess we will agree to disagree. This is coming from someone who goes to gym 5 days a week 2 hours a day and plays hockey/vball on the weekends. I believe health care is a human right. There shouldn't be 27 million uninsured people in the USA. One illness, fall, accident and they're ruined for life. -

Obesity is a life choice. You cannot force people to eat healthy and exercise. Has nothing to do with healthcare in each country.
