  1. Some of us are tracking this rain event with as much interest as a potential snowstorm.
  2. Lots of upper 20s in the usual cold spots in western, NJ. Lowest I found is 25 at Walpack. Rebounding nicely later.
  3. I'm pulling for the rain this weekend. Hopefully we see something. We'll also be covering or taking in some plants tonight. Freeze watch up for my area. They're saying as low as 28, probably out in the Walpack area. From fires to freezes, and back again if we don't get some rain.
  4. Walpack, NJ today recorded Min 32/Max 77. 32 was the state low. 77 tied three others for the state high. I had 39/77 here. Obviously, mine isn't official.
  5. That was a rarity that year (2013), especially since all of the other Top lows ranked are much earlier in the 20th century, with the exception of 1992.
  6. Wasn't there a Memorial Day Blizzard in the high peaks of the Adirondacks that year? Or was it another year more recently? I just remember being out one night that weekend and it was windy, overcast, raw, and in the mid-40s at best, living in Morris County at the time. Heat back on on the house, and very much unlike Memorial Day. Didn't do much that weekend except card and board games inside.
  7. I've been watching the precip bust apart all day before reaching here. A few drizzles, but so far 0 in the rain gauge. Radar looks more impressive than is actually reaching the ground. Let's see if forecasts for tomorrow and beyond hold true. Otherwise just raw, windy, and overcast.
  8. It was almost predictable that after hitting the 90s two weeks ago, we would settle back into a blah cool damp spring pattern for a time. Any chance we salvage part of Saturday before the rains begin?
  9. Mostly light to periodically brief heavy rain on and off all afternoon along with hours of scattered lightening and thunder. Rain gauge only registered 0.75" so far which seems accurate as the most intense cells skipped just west of us. Rainfall totals are much more impressive to the west in a line from Hunterdon County up through High Point State Park. It looks like things are calming down. Haven't heard thunder now in over a half hour and radar is showing less intensity.
  10. My other half and I were up in Hartford earlier today. The car read 95F as we were departing to head back. I remarked to her that I didn't think it was that hot, and that it was probably amplified from the pavement. Now I see the reading is actually credible. It didn't feel quite that warm because of the low humidity. But damn, record high mid 90s in New England in mid-April. My own high registered as 93F with 17% humidity. I think my 93 might be a touch high because of the thermometer location and quality of the shelter. Then again.....
  11. Walpack, NJ made it up to 76 from a low of 27. The 27 was the state low and the high of 76 tied four other NJ stations for the state high. My home hydrometer made it down to 13% this afternoon. Amazing weather, however, we will start begging for rain soon if the dry conditions persist. Looks like they're having some interesting conditions in the upper mid-west too.
  12. Walpack, NJ had a low of 27 and is already up to 75 with lots of heating time to go. It is also currently both the state low and high so far today.
  13. Wide temperature spreads today. My low is 31, with a high of 70. Several other stations recorded 40 degrees+ min/max variation. The state low shows 21 early this morning at a station just west of Toms River. Almost doesn't seem right, but maybe it is. It must be a wide open flat area to radiate like that. I expect a possibility of red-flag warnings coming this week, especially if the breeze kicks up a bit, and also the drought monitor to expand the yellow color in our area.
  14. For as warm as it's supposed to be later, the last 24 hours+ have actually been quite raw, with temps in the mid 40s to low 50s, overcast and damp. It was even cold in the house and had to bump the heat back up. Pretty typical dreary early spring weather. Would love to see 80 later, but the fact I'm still pretty socked in with cloud clover makes me skeptical.
  15. Yes. Several years back, in April the station once recorded a daily low of 27 and high of 80. It's already up to 41 from the low of 19. I expect they'll get to 60 later, and maybe more. Link to the NJ stations: Walpack is in the northwestern part of the state. https://www.njweather.org/maps/mapviewer?mapname=temperature
  16. Walpack, NJ low of 19. For folks who may not know - Walpack has rather unique geography, and sits in sort of a wide open bowl out in the boondocks of western Sussex County at an elevation of roughly 400 feet between two high ridges. No one lives there that I'm aware of, but Rutgers/Nick Stefano maintain a station out there. It can have impressive lows, and even sometimes highs. There have been a couple of instances in the past where the station records both the state high and state low temperature in the same 24-hour period. It's a fun bike ride or drive out through that area. Just don't expect much in the way of cell service or modern conveniences, aside from maybe the Walpack Inn which is nearby.
  17. Mid-winter dewpoints tonight. Temps will drop fast in some areas. Maybe I'll see my last sub-30 night of the season.
  18. Preliminary reports of 2 tornadoes in SNJ yesterday, Ocean, and Burlington counties, per NJ.com We've gone from almost muggy yesterday with dewpoints around 60 in the late morning, to a few sub-10 degree dewpoints this afternoon. The front passage here was nothing remarkable severe wise, but certainly did dry the air out.
  19. Gotta be getting close to some ice glaze on the high peaks like High Point. Only 38 here with moderate rain.
  20. It was a good day to sip one or two out on the deck with some sun if that's your thing. I wish we'd get days like this in summer sprinkled in between the humid conditions. The very low humidity is a nice change once in a while.
  21. 58 degrees, 18% humidity and deep blue skies. Wow.
  22. Nothing at work except 0.5-1" under trees and in the woods. Otherwise, the open grass was completely bare and all of it from earlier had melted. Back home, we have 3.5 inches of solid cover. There was a rapid pick up in the snow depth driving east along Newton-Sparta road and within a few miles, it was a different world, even with a modest elevation gain. The other surprising thing, the snow here is more powdery than expected. It's actually kicking up and whipping around some in the wind. Currently just light snow. Temp is 31.
  23. I noticed a marked difference in heading from Sparta west to the outskirts of Newton for work. There is much less snow (not even an inch yet) on the ground here and the snow intensity got less. The elevation here is 570 feet vs. 800 feet at our house.
  24. In the last twenty minutes I've dropped from 31 to 30 and the snow intensity has increased, which is leading to it sticking to pavement now. Schools that chose to remain open might be in for a bit of backlash this morning. Doesn't bother me personally, but with buses and student drivers, it creates a concern with the timing of this.
  25. Steady moderate snow here. 1.5" on non-paved surfaces. 31F Some schools are closed, and others are on delayed openings.
