January 28/29 Blizzard Observations/Discussion/Nowcasting

Just drove home from work. Man, driving on the Loop Pky in this weather was a trip. It’s not even that windy yet and the blowing snow was impressive to see coming off the bay. Visibility is already very low. -
Thundersnow on the Forks or SE Massachusetts probably a good possibility with the cold air and the ocean “warmth” converging, no?

The highs and lows in the forum are incredible. From model to model, the speed at which they happen is impressive too. …please continue, it’s entertaining to this amateur.

I’m sick of the wind. that’s it, that’s the post.

At least the ground should be nice and solid after this kind of cold. That’s the only positive I can say about the wind. Hoping the gusts stay in the 40-50 range and not the 60-70s.

@wdrag Youre a large part of the reason I finally made an account after, literally, a decade of lurking here. There are a lot of posters here who really know their shit, and I love sitting here and absorbing the information, but when you start a thread I always take notice and so should everyone else. Thanks for everything.

We just get so many damaging wind events now it’s become…almost normal. Besides the fact I’ve lost these 5 trees, I had one destroy everything in my backyard and also hit my garage. That was from a downburst in July of 2010. Then I had another tree hit my house in August of 2019 during a severe thunderstorm, put a hole in my roof and then destroy my porch. So, understandably I’d say, I get a little anxious during these kinds of things.

I’m in Western Suffolk, not right on the water but just above Sunrise Hwy, so I’m always checking on the wind, and, especially, the gusts. I have one tree left on my property, I had 6, and I want to keep this one. I’ve already took anything in that could be damaged, but I always get nervous….wind is just so unforgiving.

Euro model is notorious for over estimating wind speed, right?

Lol. NGL though, I’d rather that than an all-day driving, windy, cold rain storm…that’s for sure.

God…that was exactly the answer I was hoping I would NOT get. I was hoping maybe there would be a bit of a lull in the winds at that time. Appreciate the answer.

I hope this is alright to ask in this thread…but I have a 10-mile run to do on Saturday morning which seems to fall smack dab between what Walt is talking about on Friday and this possible Sunday into Monday coastal storm. I already see the NWS calling for a low of 10 on Friday night to a “high” of 23 for Saturday. Running 10 miles is daunting enough in the first place, but can any of you tell me what the wind is gonna be like on Saturday morning? The run is in the Blue Point/Patchogue area on the South Shore of LI. Thanks in advance, I have to work until 1am the night before, so I’d like to have what clothes I’m running in, in advance.

It’s definitely rained more than I expected. Doing yardwork and cleanup outside in this weather sucks.
