Their Facebook page includes homes that don’t meet 1995 building codes in the order. Seems excessive to me, that's a lot of homes, and there's quite a bit of confusion in the comments.
I think it's really easy for us to become complacent in this part of the state. I've spent almost all of my 38 years within an hour of Tampa and Irma was the first hurricane I experienced. I think a lot of people have the "I'll believe it when I see it" mentality when it comes to a major hurricane making landfall in the area.
I came across an abstract for an article published in the AMS Journal of Climate earlier this year that predicts that "Florida’s Gulf Coast is projected to see significant increases in TC activity relative to the long-term historical mean" through the 2030s. I searched the forum to see if there has been any discussion on this but didn't turn up anything but it will be interesting to see if this happens.
