+1. Fresh wood chips reduce available nitrogen in the soil as they start to decompose initially. -

My tomatoes and peppers from last weekend have already sprouted and are about an inch tall so all it's going well there. I need to get my oscillating fan wired up on the timer so they don't get too leggy. Just planted my lettuce seeds and first crop of radish seeds. I'll plant the snap peas in another week or two and do subsequent radish crops every week or so. My lemon and lime trees are getting flowers so I gotta pollinate them and for the first time ever I successfully overwintered a mandevilla vine, it's getting tons of buds. They won't go outside til April after all threat of frost. -
I'd have to give it an A down here. About 150% of climo for snow and you can't ask for much better on sustained cold temps.

My God. Out at the cabin in the mountain and the wind is relentless. 30F and got about an inch of snow overnight, with continuous 30-40mph wind. It's just nonstop. I hate March. Somebody needs to remind me of this post when I'm bitching about 98F and humid in July.

Why is it always so damn windy in the MA? We rarely had this crap in Michigan. I'm surprised all the pine trees don't only grow branches on the east side of the tree like in the tundra.

Now? I put down a whole bunch of seed in late fall and in the last week it's actually started to germinate and grow. You'll get more crabgrass doing it now but whatever. -
Droughtbuster out there today. Didn't see any wind or storminess when the line came through, just steady moderate rain for a couple hours now. 54F.

Started my tomato and banana pepper seeds this weekend. They're on the heater and under grow lights now. Usually I start them in February but last year was so cold in April I had to delay getting them in the ground and they started getting leggy in the trays, so this year I decided to hold off until March before starting them, anticipating a cool april. -
I have mine going now. So dry in my house I just started leaving pot of water on it to try and humidify things. Seems to raise the humidity in the house about 5% but that's the most it can do. Better than nothing I guess. WJLA is saying wednesday might feel humid, I'm gonna have all the windows open that day.

Not sure if I should play it off as "see what's happening because budget cuts!!" or else "if this is what I'm currently paying for then just cut it all to the bone". I'll just look at my home weather station's "12hr weather forecast" function and stick with that at this point.

Thanks LWX, critical analysis.

Screw that, I'm ready for tree frogs, moths, and air conditioning. I'm also getting a whole-house humidifier in time for next winter.
-
Well today sucks.
-
What an awesome day. I cut down about 35 tulip trees to get ready for moth season and also did a ton of trimming. Was nice to get all that done without breaking a sweat.

Eccentric heal drops are your friend. Try them off your stairs at home and then progress to one leg at a time. Achilles and calf injuries become more common at middle age, though actually tearing a calf muscle absent a traumatic injury is still pretty rare.

It's just he next logical step in our transition to Idiocracy. Might be smart to buy PepsCo stock futures or stock up on Mountain Dew so you can arbitrage that shit in a few years.

Yeah I think we're 0 for 2 with advertised EPIC patterns the past two winters now.

Solid rain with the front passage here. Hopefully enough to wash the salt off the roads. Getting tired of seeing my car covered in salt dust. Plus I can break the motorcycle out now that the salt is gone.
-
It's been so long since we had a proper coastal storm that I'm well on the side of skepticism of any model showing one. Eventually I guess the pattern will change but I'm so gun shy at this point.
-
I hope so! Got windows open trying to get some humidity in the house. Supposed to be working from home today and I don't see myself getting much done with how nice it is outside.

67F today, seems we don't have the easterly breeze component today so temps by the water aren't much cooler than the mainland. Barred owls hooting too, almost nesting season.
-
Today was an example of my most hated phenomenon this time of year. Had to go to the doctor a few miles to the west of me today and it was 59F in their parking lot. Drove back to my house and the temp dropped to 51F. Must be a slight east component of the wind coming off the water. Always seems that way around now. DC will be mid-60s but here by the bay it's struggling to get out of the low 50s. Comes with the territory. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to help much in July.

Back in Calvert today - lovely weather out there with nary a breeze. The bluebirds are out in full force doing their spring calling and looking in all our bluebird houses for the best nesting sites. About 7wks until the first hummingbirds arrive!

Yup I think so. If we can get more days like today then I say bring it on.

I ordered my Lola pepper and tomatoes seeds two days ago, gotta start them indoors next weekend. At DC House I'm thinking I'm going to cut down the large crape myrtle in front of the house and replace it with something native. I hate crape myrtles, they don't add any wildlife value.
