Best way for you to forecast in the future is to take your gut feelings and go 180 degrees opposite. You may indeed wind up as one of the most accurate on the board.. -

Yes. I'm sure you will enjoy daily 80 degree weather all winter long like Havana. -
October Discussion: Bring the Frost-Hold the Snow
Jeff Grann replied to 40/70 Benchmark's topic in New England
LOL....Our generation is still at work after 4:45 and after the 1-2 hr commute from the city home, dinner is after 7 for many. We also walk the dog after dinner and then sit down in our recliners and unwind by watching a baseball or hockey game before bed...A foreign concept to those immersed in Tic Tok and what Khloe Kardashian is doing all day. -
Nothing went dormant in SW Florida that I noticed in Winter besides the bugs. Things may have grown a bit slower but all my tropical trees and plants were still vibrant
-
Didn't easily find climate data for those small locations. That's why I chose San Juan
-
I would even reluctantly accept the logic that the subtropics begin South of the line where most everything isn't dormant or dead during Winter.
-
Ok. So we will lump the Equator to NYC as tropical/subtropical and North of there to the Pole as Arctic or sub Arctic. Sounds simple
-

Tropical: San Juan PR. Every month averages between 83-88/ 73-78 Sub Tropical: Ft.Myers 72-90/ 57-77 New York City 39-85/ 26-69

I'll just redefine the shoreline of the East Coast a desert. What the hell. ..The beaches are full of sand. There is nothing tropical, subtropical of any sort when you take our yearly average high/low temperature as the standard for our climate
-
No. I gave you the dictionary definition of subtropical. We are not a region adjacent to the tropics. Unless you refine 1200 miles as adjacent.
-
Pure tropical climates are those in the Caribbean where temps are stable all year round 80- 90 by day/ 70-80 at night. So basically people here are broad brushing subtropical to the point that you are equating our yearly climate to South Florida which is absurd. You want to say we are experiencing stretches of S FL humidity...Have at it. But they don't get a cold frontal passage from mid June till October. Not 1 cool, dry day the entire Summer
-
Doesn't change the fact that with the longer growing season the planet is experiencing record high food production. And as far as where you live there are still months of bare trees and frozen ground incapable of anything growing. That is not subtropical no matter how you spin it
-
I lived on Sanibel for 3 years. Worked with boat captains and Meteorologists. Being from NY I was fascinated by the different weather down there. It was made clear to me that Florida had a Subtropical climate from just below the Tampa Bay area . North of there was not due to the continental influence on the weather. I saw the difference especially in overnight lows . As far as the 70's, I still have the Time Magazine that was devoted to ”The next ice age cometh"?. It was very clear how NOAA and the scientific community we're leaning back then.
-
The South is not subtropical by definition until you get past Central Florida. Nobody mentioned politics here. But if you think science isn't politically driven in 2021 I have a bridge to sell you in lower Manhattan. Science also predicted a cooling planet in the late 70's, warning of shorter growing seasons and world food shortages . Reality is we warmed and have record crop yields. Science is right until it's wrong. Has happened over and over throughout history.

Definition of subtropical: Relating to or characteristic of the regions adjacent to or bordering on the tropics........Unless you consider Central NJ the tropics, we are not a subtropical climate regardless of humid Summer's. The subtropics do not experience single digit temps or blizzards. Another example of redefining normally accepted definitions to push the world is ending agenda.

Subtropical? LOL. Let me know when Palm trees can survive a NYC Winter. Subtropical is not defined as Summer dews. It is a year round climate .

September Discussion Thread: Bring the frost; kill the bugs.
Jeff Grann replied to moneypitmike's topic in New England
Unless it is a brutally cold windy winter day/ evening, I'd take the cold any day over high heat and humidity. I have a large inground pool to boot. While I like the mild Spring and Fall weather better than sub freezing cold, the disgusting 90/70 days we were slapped with much of the Summer provide no enjoyment whatsoever. Cutting the lawn twice a week for 90 min at a time with gnats swarming your face and eyes and other bugs attracted to your sweat just sucks . The dog doesn't want to take a decent walk, nor do I in a putrid air mass under a Burger King french fry lamp sun. Winter is peaceful to take hikes and ski. There aren't annoying motorcycles riding by or people with windows open blasting loud music. You are right about the snow. You don't have to deal with it that often so unlike in Summer when the pool, the garden watering and the lawn are daily chores Id' rather not do after work, Winter I pull into the garage , wife makes dinner and I take the dog for a quiet walk. I then sit and relax watching a hockey game in front of the NG stove until bedtime. That doesn't suck -
Not there either . You just have much higher ratios with altitude.

Sandy made landfall down around Atlantic City a hundred miles south of New York Harbor if this thing came right into New York Harbor or say into Sandy Hook it would not need to be as strong as Sandy to cause similar flooding into Manhattan. It is also very slow moving and will have multiple high tides that will not be able to go back out if that is the case
