I'd be really happy with a few inches after yesterday. I didn't have a chance to get out and enjoy it much yesterday, so some cold powder on top of yesterday's snowfall on a cold Friday in early January would be awesome!

Your trees are all dead. As Eric Clapton said: Let it snain!

Haven't heard you poo-poo anything recently, so I'm surprised to hear this from you.
-
Heat up the car, as well.

I'll take the combination of pretty much all other guidance v. the Euro, though I do realize there are relatively minor differences in a fast flow that can cause relatively big discrepancies among them.

Exactly how we see it. Makes political decisions much easier to make and "sell."

GFS looks just a little flatter than previous runs.

I don't know if you can put all the blame on VDOT. If you get high volume of traffic - including tractor trailers - trying to drive in 2"/hr rates, accidents will happen. That starts the chain of events that closes down the highway. How many resources are available to move multiple 18-wheelers off of entrance and exit ramps in 12" of hardpacked snow along a 50-mile stretch of highway? If you can't move them and get people off the road, then you can't plow.
-
Honestly, I'm fine with it at this time...
-
Still no plow in my neighborhood here in Burke. Likely that all available resources are being diverted to get 95 and other roads in the Fredericksburg area open, so I'm not complaining.

I guess he figured that the snow had basically stopped up here and that it'd be fine. One look at Google maps would have divested him of that idea. He also could have been making a beer run and wanted to cover his tracks with this tweet.

You have cars and trucks in the way - no way plows can get through. You also have abandoned cars and jackknifed tractor trailers all over the place that require a ton of support to move...especially with the roads covered in snow and ice. It's a huge ripple effect - as soon as a few big rigs go down and some entrances and exits get blocked by stuck cars and tucks, it's basically game over. I'm sure EJ can chime in on this, but I can only imagine that the amount of logistical support to get this going again in massive.

I feel like every time something like this happens, my reaction is shock at the insanity of their obs...because it's ridiculous. Got to 18F her, which is basically the forecast, but I'm a little surprised it wasn't lower.

I guess my parents are lucky they were able to find a passable exit off of 95S at about 4:30 pm yesterday. They checked into a hotel that doesn't have any power (thus no heat).

Thanks! I’m partial to that one, as well. That deep black sky behind the lit-up house with black shutters that’s swallowed up by snow…it just feels right. Helps that my boy is watching me out the front door like “Dafuq you doin’ out there, dad?”

With the RGEM showing that, I expect the GGEM to look really nice tonight.
-
The RGEM is a crack-azz model. Give me some of that.

I say as soon as the watches go up. But when with Sterling put those out?

Awesome pictures, MN! And I totally agree…I was so stoked to be able to see and get pictures of our place with the lights still up. Got some decent ones. Out back as the sun was setting: Holly tree out front. One limb had already snapped off, and I was nervous for two more (one of which is obvious from this picture: Sagging knockout roses: Wide shot from across the street:

Haven’t seen a plow on my cul-de-sac yet today. Not complaining though - I’ve got nowhere to be!

Canadian had a storm at 12z, as well.

I mentioned it earlier in the thread, but my parents have been stuck on 95S just north of Fredericksburg since about 9:15 am. They left a hotel in Springfield for their place in Florida this morning and tried to get through before the heaviest snow came in, but my dad (stupidly, and very unlike him) didn't take into account that others might not do so well in the snow. Jackknifed tractor trailers all over the place are blocking exit and entrance ramps, so no one can get off the road even if they wanted to. Again...that was dumb decision (I told them to stay put until things calmed down), and I'm sure plenty of others figured they could get to where they need to go without thinking of the ripple effects single-vehicle incidents and other potential multiple-vehicle accidents.

Ended with just shy of 9.25" here in Burke. Compaction has left it at about 8.5" right now. Decent amount of slush with the first clearing. Definitely lost a little accumulation to just the wet surface at the start. Even the second clearing left the surface a little wet.
