We definitely want to push social media more, but man...it's like pulling teeth. There's a handful of people who actually work hard to try to make it work, but it never feels like enough. I've mentioned to the Board that if you search "pool" in Google Maps near us, our pool doesn't show up, but no one does anything about it. It's insane! There are also a lot of ideas from Board members and neighbors, but then they look at us two swim team reps and assume we'll put their ideas into action. I think I've hit the frustration stage of the team rep role after my bright-eyed optimism of last year.

I'm not on the pool board, but as the Team Rep I have a lot of inside info as to what goes on. For our pool, there was a lot of "we do things this way because that's the way it's always been done." The Board turned over almost completely last year, so I give them a little leeway in trying to shift the mindset of how to effectively run the place, but I still feel like there's an unwillingness to make attempts to change. I hear you about the amenities thing. Our pool is quite nice, but it's not like we have tennis courts or a big picnic area or a playground or whatever. I do think that we could do more to enhance the social aspect of the pool outside of the ad hoc parents having drinks and pizza on a Friday night (which is a lot of fun as it is!). Just need to make it a place that folks want to hang out and feel it's worth their while.

It's tough around here. There are so many (small-ish) pools close by, but even then I don't really get why folks would uproot and go to another. Oh well... Our team struggles to even get enough kids to fill lanes and relays, so our struggle about bringing in new kids is the complete opposite of yours! My main beef is with the pool itself, though. It's a wonderful pool (clean, open, plenty of space, and a real community feel tucked right in the middle of the neighborhood), but there's never really been outreach to expose the pool to nearby neighborhoods. Our other issue is that a large subdivision almost right next to ours is in a completely different grade school catchment area, so those families almost all go to that other pool. "Our" catchment area is stretched out, so it's hard to convince folks to come to our pool if there's another around. Ugh...just writing this makes me less happy about this season than before.

The average tax-paying citizen may not directly benefit, but I think you're being naïve if you believe that oil futures (or other market-driven concerns) are the only thing driving the attempt at long-range forecasting. On-topic: How dem waves coming?

Summer swim is truly in full swing now! We had our Team rep meeting this past Sunday where we went over administrative stuff (including the votes on changes to the bylaws and all that boring stuff) and found out which divisions we're going to be in. We moved up one division, which is pretty much what we figured...and it's a good place for us! Bummer is that we found out that one of our top swimmers is going to a different poll this summer. She's killed it this winter and is moving to stay with her club coach in the summer. Pretty disappointing, but whatever. And then we found out last night that our top family is moving soon . They're staying on the team for at least this summer, but man...what a kick in the nuts. As a small team, we just can't handle blows like that, so the "recruitment" of new families in the nearby neighborhoods is going into full effect!

Trying to advance science is a waste of neither time nor resources.

DCA in the 50s is a different beast than DCA in the 2020s. I'm not necessarily saying that it's a 20" difference of a beast, but UHI *HAS* to play a part in that.

Looks like there's a 3000' ridge that pops up just west of town, which is like 200'. That'll make a massive difference in a late-season event!

In theory it could if you were only concerned about modeling for a very specific location. I'd assume that any modification to the logic in a model to specifically target one bias in one area of the world would have knock-on effects that may have greater negative results in other areas, so making that update just isn't worth it in the grand scheme of things.

I have it for Champions League, but every once in awhile there's something that the kids or the wife and I are interested in that just happens to be available. I have so little free time to watch TV that I can't even imagine starting a new series.

But it's not an ob for our region.
-
And that High is getter stronger - in a nice position and goes from 1039 to 1042 between 180 and 186.
-
That's one thing that has stood out to me. It's plainly obvious (and sensical) that when the High is further west, we get a better feed of cold air and simply a better alignment of all features to help this thing run the coast rather than cut inland.
-
Agreed. I get why folks would want to chase, but obs in New York or Vermont or Oregon or whatever aren't relevant to our obs at all, so banter is better!
-
Not sure why anyone would post obs from a chase when people here barely see flakes. Reeks of one-uppance.

Dude...we know it's Weather Bell. It says it on the GD images you post!

I do believe that we can sometimes see the next winter showing its hand as we come to the end of one ENSO state. I'd like to think thats the case here, but maybe I'm just cherrypicking and wishcasting.

In Burke, we had snow for a good amount of time between 11:30 or noon yesterday until maybe 4:00 or so, with a few bursts of maybe a little more than light snow. Problem was that it was 35-38 degrees and in the middle of the day in mid-March, so those flakes never stood a chance. Kids liked it though...and it was cool to throw down some spring crop seeds while the snow was falling!

If it's the WB GFS, then I'm all in on it.

I got me some drizzle.

The “is it ever going to snow again” discussion.

Can't agree. In my opinion, people are basing their takes on emotions stemming from a recent run of years (mostly Ninas) that have sucked. Could it be that, going forward, anything but a Nino is going to suck? Maybe. But I don't think you can make that definitive call based on a relatively short timeframe of suckage. -

Seedlings are really coming along nicely. I up-potted the tomatoes, lettuce, and broccoli, but I had to replant mache and lettuce seeds because they really didn't take well on first planting (planted too deep?). Good thing is that they're doing much better this time around. My 5-year-old is all about the garden this year. Every day, she says that we have to go check on the plants, and is always making sure to point out the cells/plants that need a little watering. She loves saying "I have a REALLY green thumb," which is just so freaking awesome! -
