  1. We had a 27kw gen in our large home in VA to power the Airco. We put it in after the 2012 Derecho from Hell left us without power for 5 days in 100+ temperatures and ruined 3 refrigerators full of food. It was a miserable experience, but at least we could go to work and have light and most important - Airco. Up here on the island we just installed a 14K Kohler for a much smaller place. The unit was $4k, the installation was about $5K, which included delivery on a front end loader from the dock, gravel bed and tying the genny into the propane tank. work was just finished last Saturday. I am part of the island's wellness/aging in place team and see the value as a cranky retired sort of being able to shelter in place. Losing some food was small, but very irritating issue. The bigger issue for us, especially in the last power outage during the October Noreaster ,was we only have about 9 hours a day of usable sunlight a day during that time of year. Sitting in 15 hours of darkness drove us crazy, hence the generator. Understand the nice hotel gig, but I think it probably works better on the mainland.
  2. We see them all the time at our place. Some people even feed them, so they feel quite entitled to stroll across patios, etc.
  3. OK, Question here. Normally when I pull up NWS, I can get a forecast for my ZIPcode. Tonight, when I type in the ZIP, the page defaults to "Coastal Cumberland" instead of the ZIP, as in Coastal Cumberland County, of which we are a part. And suddenly we are looking at 9-16 inches through tomorrow afternoon, which isn't close to what I am seeing on the latest HRRR or the NAM. Never seen this NWS default before in my (admittedly) limited experience watching the weather up here in Pine Tree Land. Is this done to save NWS time? Or because the forecasts across these contiguous ZIPS are virtually identical? Or is this some kind of alternate met universe?
  4. The 14z HRRR shows promise. Hope later runs really up the totals.
  5. Looks like onite total is .25 out here on Long, which is NE of previously cited locals and, most significantly, surrounded by H2O. Not enough for cx skis, at least not yet.
  6. Snow just started falling out here on Long Island, 6 miles NE of PWM. Assume other frequent lurkers in SoPo & Scarborough already underway. NWS did back off onite proj to <1", but adds some at the end.
  7. MAHK WEBSTAH -Some of us are lurkers busy putting away golf carts, setting up snowblowers and dreaming of skiing.
  8. 12/5 storms triggered some great Capital Weather Gang discussions among Washington Post weather devotees between '14-16.
  9. Miserable rain here, .49 inches since 8am. Now at 37 degrees, with wind gusting to 10, well under predicted 15-20 with gusts to 30. This darkness at 4pm scenario is all the more miserable because you main landers are getting snow while we max out on mud puddles.
  10. We get the same thing. It is relatively flat out here, so rain and sleet are fairly manageable, but we seem more rain Nov-March than we would like and not nearly enough snow.
  11. Top photo is simply awesome. Frameworthy even.
  12. Which is why I am a bit suspicious of our forecast. It's still going to be plenty powerful.
  13. I was wondering about the "northern fringe" idea because it was so warm, although several runs showed greater snow totals towards Yarmouth. NS Only bare spot out here was under the car, which we are careful to keep in the exact same place so we can get a running/gunning start on bare ground. The rest of the place is just absolutely plastered with thick, smushy snow. We got 6.3 inches. 36.1/33. Still snowing while the sun is desperately trying to poke through.
  14. Still snowing on Casco Bay, although the intensity has let up some. Now 36 degrees. We have until sunset to get this place plowed, etc., because nitetime temps will be in/near single digits and we won't see daytime temps above freezing until sometime Friday. No complaints. Looks like a movie set.
  15. Wind picking up a bit, temp up 1 degree to 33, snow starting to fall off a few branches, but still coming down at a good steady pace.
  16. We are at 6" on Long Island on Casco Bay. Heavy, beautiful , wet, gorgeous, clumpy, fantastic snow. Still coming down strong.
  17. Snowfall becoming more consistent, but no accumulation yet. Temps slowly dropping. Now 33/31.
  18. Could be some power outages. Lots of blue spruces out here. They topple pretty easily because of shallow root structure.
  19. Just started within the last 90 seconds up here off Portland, ME. 34.7/30
  20. Storm closing in on MHT south to PVD on radar. Pretty impressive. 33/28
