  1. I was leaning against a wall and could feel very slight rocking. Guesses? 3.2.
  2. I thought I felt something too. But I live behind an ally.
  3. I suggest sheltering in place away from the computer
  4. posted on main wx thread, but good read http://blogs.agu.org/mountainbeltway/2011/08/23/the-mineral-va-earthquake-of-august-23-2011/
  5. a lot of it is lack of research.. people forget almost everything is fairly easily available. i saw plenty of "comparo" reports which were wrong. yea 1,000 times bigger on magnitude scale, but 31,000+ times stronger. http://earthquake.us.../calculator.php
  6. I saw it on the CFS but said 'meh'.. Climo argues no.
  7. Yeah, most likely at least as far as traffic etc. Of course DC is kinda dead this time of year to begin with. That event was more us being pansies...
  8. We do freak out easily as a region but I don't think there has been too much here. This wasn't far off being a much bigger deal.
  9. Metro wasn't bad. I think a lot of ppl went home early.
  10. yeah.. sounds about right. they are definitely good about pulling the scarebytes out to use.
  11. meh, i think illl just walk home after looking at twitter
  12. time to test the metro? plz hold off big one till im out.
  13. it's always a possibility.. i doubt that's what his main takeway is, but it's good for a paper
  14. which dummies came up with that theory?
  15. i would imagine it would be open but who knows. maybe leave (forget the term) for those who need. i didnt even think we could get a quake that large around here -- i mean i know pretty much anyone can in theory but still. i do wonder if we'll get any sizeable aftershocks/etc. but since these are midplate events is there less of a risk? i must admit my e/q knowledge is much more rusty than when i was younger..
  16. so many early reports are iffy in situations like this so hard to say. arent s waves more unnatural than a general swaying motion that might be normal there?
  17. irene's not going to hit us. remember the fish with arms.
  18. (AP) - A spokesman for Washington National Cathedral says at least three of the four pinnacles on the central tower have fallen off and the central tower appears to be leaning.
  19. w00t From: XXX Sent: Tuesday, August 23, 2011 3:39 PM To: All Foreign Policy Subject: Message regarding Earthquake Dear Colleagues, Because of the earthquake that hit this area two hours ago, the executive office has suggested that all staff be given the flexibility to go home as early as they choose. This is an option. Nobody is required to leave. You should be aware that traffic on the roads and metro is reported to be intense at the moment. As a reminder, if the ground starts shaking again in an aftershock, the appropriate earthquake response protocol is to brace under a desk, in a corner, or in an interior doorway/space (i.e. away from glass), then evacuate immediately when the tremor ends. That means that if an aftershock hits, everyone is required to evacuate all Brookings properties as soon as it is over. When you leave the building please move promptly onto the sidewalk, away from the building. Safe travels home,
  20. it's got a huge roof etc, but it's also really new. ppl were focusing on which buildings were new and old on my street at work but i dont think it matters that much with the codes here.
  21. earthquakes suck... i've never understood those who are like "they're fun". maybe afterwards but this one was a reminder how you never seem to know if they're going to go to that next level or not.
  22. i just dont think you need to tell us how it felt is all... but im done, stupid argument.
  23. parts of DCUSA (Columbia Heights) roof collapsed.. national harbor parking facility significant damage according to reports
