2024-2025 Fall/Winter Mountain Thread
BhamParker replied to Buckethead's topic in Southeastern States
Hope all is well with you mountain folks who I live thru vicariously this time of year. I’m hoping for the storm to trend better for us down here but if not I’ll likely be hauling up the family to Maggie valley on Thursday-Sunday. Watching model trends carefully, but hope we all can score! Good luck! -

Nice flurries here tonight as well. It has snowed off and on all day today. Hate that I can’t stay for round 2 on Thursday and Friday. Thankful to be only 5 hours away and get to live like yall do once or twice a year in the winter. . -

I shared these in the mountain thread but will share here as well. I measured 2-3 inches this morning after the morning snow was wrapping up. We still are getting some flurries now but this morning was beautiful. We would have had 8+ easy if we didn’t mix all day long yesterday. The heavy snow from 4-6 yesterday was something I haven’t seen before up here but we would always lose it once we went to lighter returns and that hurt the accumulation part of this storm. Still a beautiful snow and my third consecutive chase of MLK weekend up this way. There is just something about this weekend. Enjoy the photos! . -

Ended up with 2-3 inches. Would have easily been a lot more if we didn’t have mixing issues, but it’s beautiful and stuck to everything. . -

Moderate snow here all morning and we picked up a couple inches last night. It’s stacking up rather easily right now with temps in the teens. Not sure how long it’ll last but big flakes . -

Getting some nice light snow right now and it’s accumulating nicely with temps below freezing. We picked up and inch or two over night and everything is white. . -

The HRRR continues to show a lull here for a bit but is picking up on some intensity with snow around midnight and lasting for several hours. I’d expect us to be well below freezing by then and am hoping that’s when we can pile some up. Mixing has really messed me up in this event but still has been great. . -

We are back to lighter precipitation mixed with some sleet. That was an intense hour or so where we picked up 1-2 inches. Praying for some magic tonight when temps finally drop . -

NWS has around an inch in my grid tonight. After looking at all models and the radar, I think 4+ is an easy bet. It’s going nuts right now and radar shows nothing to stop it. . -

We just can’t stay snow and hardly any accumulation today so far at 3,000 feet off ski mountain road. Banking on tonight after the sun goes down . -

This reminds me of the Christmas 2010 storm that I was here for. We mixed with snow and rain most of the day but never really accumulated much. Once the sun went down it got into the lower 20s and the small flakes really added up all night long. Obviously a different setup, but that’s when I’m banking on our accumulation. 12z euro was widespread 6-8 and snowing into tomorrow afternoon. Very similar to GFS. Some of yall are loading up to the west! . -

It’s just not accumulating much here for the most part. I’d expect the evening and overnight hours to really deteriorate once we lose the sun and temps drop. The mountains usually squeeze out every ounce of moisture the atmosphere has before the system exits. Moisture returns look incredible downstream. We just need to get well below 32 degrees. . -

HRRR looks beautiful for today. I don’t think we’ve seen close to the best dynamics and rates. It was a noticeable difference when we got to downtown Gatlinburg for breakfast. Much more mixing downtown and primarily snow for us at 3,000 feet. Hoping those rates this afternoon mean business . -

Probably half an inch up here in Gatlinburg this AM. It is mixing with freezing rain and sleet at times. This afternoon seems to be when the big show gets started with higher rates and all snow. I’m thinking we have a a pretty high ceiling. I am hoping for 5+. Very pretty this morning. . -
