  1. Measured 5.8” this morning on the deck. Surprised at how light and powdery this is, even at the bottom. Very easy to shovel.
  2. MSP official storm total of 6.9” on 0.41” of precipitation. This sets a new snowfall record for Valentine’s Day in Minneapolis. Snowfall futility is now off the table as our season total jumps up to 14.2” which is the record low from winter 1930/31. The wet nature of the snow at onset will make for some great scenes when the sun rises.
  3. Snow will be winding down over the next hour. Walked the dog half an hour ago and there was ~5” otg. This is one of the better sneak attacks I can remember, thanks for the v-day gift Mother Nature.
  4. Rippin’ fatties right now. This is our moment Minneapolis.
  5. Over-performer underway, especially in the northern suburban counties which were upgraded to a WSW. Persistent heavy snow dropped 4”+ north of town by 7pm. Eyeballing close to 2” imby, hopefully will tack on a couple more inches. My grass is completely covered for the first time since Halloween.
  6. I had job offers in Chicago and Minneapolis. Cost of living is cheaper here, but the winters and accessibility to the outdoors is what drew me in.
  7. Ground is white. Didn’t take as long to start sticking as I thought it would.
  8. The last few sentences of the MPX forecast discussion. Pretty impressive to knock off a record this old and historic. “We don`t want to count the chickens before the eggs hatch, but it`s looking increasingly likely that this winter will knock the winter of 1877-1878 from the top spot of warmest winters on record in the Twin Cities. A crown that winter has worn for 146 years...”
  9. Snow underway here. The hi-res models depicted an hour of rain at onset, but it was mostly frozen from the get go. Ground is wet, deck is white. NWS says 3-5” game on.
  10. February 14, 2024 - The first winter weather advisory of the season imby. Incredible “winter”
  11. NAM showing 2-4” imby tomorrow. My heart says yes, but my mind knows it’s likely just foolish NAM games.
  12. I’ll keep digging for the daily weather reports and link it here too. https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/climate/twin_cities/snelling.html
  13. Somewhere SW of the metro is the futility bullseye, some farm has probably seen ~2-4 of snowfall all winter. The official measuring site for Minneapolis is the airport which is just about smack dab in the middle of the metro - 7.3” season to date. The WFO office is in Chanhassen a suburb 22 miles SW of the airport. After a 100” season last year the WFO is sitting at 5.8” currently. The NWS map, while far from perfect, shows a broad area to my SW with under 6” accumulation to date.
  14. Looks like advisory level snows across southern Minnesota on Wednesday afternoon. Another painful miss for the twin cities to maintain seasonal trends. I’ll go with 0.3” at the airport final call.
  15. MPX forecast discussions are mentioning even with average temperatures moving forward we will still break the record for warmest winter.
  16. Personally it really doesn’t matter a whole lot right now how big of a train wreck this winter turns out to be. My wife and I welcomed our 2nd child into the world last week. Cloud 9 only begins to describe how I feel. You can’t change the weather but you can impact and shape the little creatures you create in life.
  17. Deck and frozen lake are dusted. Nothing sticking to this warm ground. Top 10 event of the season.
  18. Look at that lovely snow hole over the upper Midwest. Saw a few flurries this morning so I got that going for me.
  19. Finally saw some precipitation. 0.12” of rain this morning, just about doubling our total for the year to 0.25” Also saw a pair of trumpeter swans looking for open water on the still frozen lake.
  20. Off the charts warmth. Temperature departures are running +20 across Minnesota so far this month.
  21. Thursday’s precipitation event has mostly vanished imby. Full run GFS showing 0.10” of total precip. Still sitting at 0.13” of total precip in 2024.
  22. Long range still looks bleak for the upper Midwest. At least northern Minnesota will get a good soaking rain…in February.
