Never seen it, but I hear it infuriates astronomers and ornithologists alike, the former because it introduces streaks in long exposure telescope observations, the latter because it disrupts bird migratory patterns (many species rely on stars for guidance).

WOW. I had read about astronomers being irritated about it but had no idea about the migratory patterns. Some of Musk's projects really are amazing but I always have the feeling he is a Bond villain come to life. The latest Bond movie definitely felt like it had some references in it to him.

  2. Has anyone else seen the SpaceX's Train? I've seen it the past two nights in the SW sky when out for a run with the dog between 5:30-6:00pm. First night I couldn't believe it and thought I was seeing a UFO, went home and did some searching and this was it. Looks just like this (not my gif) and slowly rises from the horizon, it becomes less visible once it gets higher in the sky.

Indeed, so emboldened are they that more money have flowed into the market this year than in the past twenty combined, margin debt has been assumed at historical extremes and risky options strategies have been deployed to such unheard of excess that the stock market has almost become the derivative and not the other way around.

I'm still learning and have only been following the economy seriously the past year, but margin debt seems like the biggie to me. However, unlike John Smith getting calls from Chase to make his credit card payment, it may benefit Bank A not to call Bank B to say "Where is my money?" because if it isn't there than Bank A is screwed and now Bank C, D, and E are calling up Bank A. Just pretend everyone has what they owe you and keep chugging along. I don't see where it ends.

Has anyone gone down the "Tether and Chinese real estate commercial paper" rabbit hole? That would be horrific.

The Beast turned on the snowguns today

Schaeffer on Instagram gave a pretty detailed update. Had no idea they put over $1 million into the snowmaking system. They started ordering pumps and parts last fall that got installed this week. Less energy used while putting out 40% more water. And 75 new snowguns that arrived last week. Damn. The system might be better than Crotched's since they have more water access. Also mentioned they changed the grade on some trails so they can open them faster. I'll be curious to see what they did.

To be honest I have only skinned there in the past 7 years I think?  It's been a while since I've ridden a lift there but it's great terrain with deep snowfall.  Incredible side country, inbounds woods.  The vibe is more laid back than the busier south side of the Notch.

Birthday Bowls, keep the skis on, and commute down to the office? lol

  6. Oh look, another Friday with Evergrande panic that will some how get "worked out" every weekend. They have had to sell personal assets to make $250 million in interest payments the past few months, the writing is on the wall. I'd love to know how Blackrock and Vanguard are playing this given how much they hold. Another financial instrument they can pass off to an unsuspecting party?

If SPY breaks below 450 it could really drop, I'm thinking 438.

  7. I went down this rabbit hole last night. All from the install verts listed on newenglandskihistory.com >1,500'

    Originals:

    K1 Gondi 3,000

    Stowe Big Spruce 1,750

    Sugarbush Gondi 2,388

    Sugarloaf 2,410

    Surprises

Canyon Quad at K is 1,193, thought it was shorter but that terrain is steep

Was a little surprised Mittersill was only 1,280. I remembered it more like Sterling at Smuggs size.

If Ascutney was ever allowed to build to the summit it would have had almost 2,300' of vert.

Original Ram's Head lift at K went 200' higher than the current.

Beartrap at Mount Snow is only 373'.

How massive Gore and Whiteface really are.

Technically it can be linked by taking a green from OZ to the base of White Cap but there's some skate skiing involved and so definitely not 2300' of fall line vert lol. Having said that, if you can't have fun with an old slow double and 1000', you're doing it wrong. Outpost double at Pico is a prime example (may be closer to 500' than 1000' tho)

Such a fun trail pod. That lift is something else.

Zoomer at Cannon is another fun short one.

? Sr has 2340 and Wildcat  2110 from the top not the Tom chair

I was referring to what is currently open. Locke and Tomcat both access just under 1400' of vert - which I think is the most vert you can get off a single lift at Sunday River. Barker or Jordan Bowl might give a little more.

LOL - wildcat will open with Tomcat lift only - so nothing from top. route down will be cat tracks to middle wildcat to bobcat. This is NOT their normal opening which is essentially Lynx with some polecat at the top - although in 2006, I do remember skiing december 30 in this configuration but can't remember the circumstances - weather (it was snowing), mechanical problems, et cetera. Bobcat is wide.

WOW, that is rough. Basically the same vert as skiing Sunday River.

Just noticed Sugarbush got Ripcord and Spillsville open. I'm feeling a quick trip up.
