  1. I just dont like the word *shower* when it refers to snow, it's a huge source of confusion for many people who always associate *shower* with rain. I think that term needs to be retired from the weather lexicon and just use flurries instead You're right though, can't waffle back and forth, they should just say *A chance of snow*

Is the -7 at LGA their all time record low, Tony? 73-76 is unusually warm for February! No records for JFK in 1949 Tony (obviously not for the cold in 1943.)
  5. But then you can also have a super windy blizzard like January 2016 with 12 straight hours of true blizzard conditions that drops over 30 inches at JFK. Maybe February 1978 is an example of wind reducing total snowfall though as JFK only received 14 inches in that storm, less than half of what they got in January 2016.
  6. Yes that was a mixing storm here too and the snowfall rates weren't as high as the other two I mentioned.
  7. I loved both the December and February snowstorms that winter, that was another snowy la nina after el nino.
  8. No 2 miles in. Winter storms don't do a lot of damage to our beaches unless one lives on a barrier island and I don't remember any snowstorm especially damaging ocean front or beach front property, it's usually the big rainstorms that do it like December 1992.

  10. Does that mean if AI weather models had been developed in the early 10s they would have been much more accurate since coastal snowstorms were much more common back then?

  12. The question is why do suppression, hugger and cutter tracks become more common with a faster Pacific but benchmark tracks become less common? What's so special about benchmark tracks that cause the opposite reaction vs the other tracks?

  15. Yes, it was a mini January 2016. 15 inches in 12 hours instead of 30 inches in 24 hours lol... 6 hours of true blizzard conditions vs 12 hours of true blizzard conditions. It happened during the day and you could not see anything outside for hours it was a true white out!
  16. My last real blizzards were January 2016 and January 2018, both were great day time long duration white out snowstorms.
  17. I think January 2016 and January 2018 both had like 11:1 ratios with stronger winds of longer duration. So, it won't be 15:1 but up to 12:1 is definitely possible.
  18. wow thanks Chris, maybe these go in cycles too-- there was a cluster in the 60s and another one in the late 70s. But only one in the 80s and then none at all for 16 years until 2001! I'm surprised we didn't have any at all in the 90s considering how snowy it was in 93-94 and 95-96!! None in the 00s after 2001 either, I'm shocked we didn't have any between 02-03 and 04-05!! Early 10s had another cluster and then of course the one associated with the big blizzard in January 2016. February 2021-- was that the one associated with the Groundhogs Day snowstorm? So this strong block can have lingering effects with more snowstorm possibilities right to the end of February before the pattern changes in early March?
