  1. ARR was -16 at this point when they hit -33 on 1/16/2009.
  2. Incredible forecast coverage of -30 or colder. We're not talking about a few sheltered/protected areas.
  3. 2 consecutive days without mail due to weather. Wow.
  4. Nice. Is that from xmacis and if so, how'd you do that?
  5. Curious to see what it gets down to here. Typically radiate better than ORD but they have about twice the snowcover and will have a little head start. Factoring those things together along with similar positioning relative to the surface high would suggest a similar outcome. Really hoping for a -30 somehow.
  6. LOT has 45 at ORD on Sunday. With a high of -10 today, that would be a 55 degree swing in high temps in 4 days. My cursory look at the previous high end arctic outbreaks for Chicago shows that none of them had a 55 degree rebound in high temperatures in just 4 days. I'm not sure what the biggest change in highs is for a 4 day period as something like a high of 5 followed by a high of 62 could have happened (or vice versa) at some point. Would take a while to figure out.
  7. Link must have updated because I don't see anything there about temps for 2/1-2/2
  8. I want to see -20 there by 9 or 10 pm to feel like there's a good chance.
  9. I was thinking about the snow cover, but there is significant snowcover extending west of Des Moines so I sort of dismissed that. Could be right though. Maybe some combination of factors like the longer distance to travel over the snowcover and CAA aloft ceasing later in Chicago metro.
  10. The lack of a bigger rise around Chicago metro is a bit interesting. Most of that area has only come up about 6 degrees from morning lows so far, not just ORD. CAA did occur through 7-8 am or so, but evidently it's been difficult to flip the switch to quicker warming.
  11. It ranks up there for sure. It's not the easiest thing to search for since you basically have to pick out notorious cold days and see what the noon temp was, unless there is some way to search by time of day. The -18 reading is colder than the noon temp on 1/20/1985, which was -17. It was -21 at noon on 1/10/1982!
  12. 2 or 3 more hours of warming, then katy bar the door.
  13. I guess I should run mine. Car is 15 years old with a battery that is not young.
  14. Fyi, the ORD official low was -23. The NWS Chicago met who is a member here called the ASOS and the -24 reading on the 5 minute obs was a rounding issue.
  15. Looks like they had -31.5C this morning, so a bit short of the record.
  16. Tomorrow morning kinda looks like the morning of 1/19/1994, but shifted northwest since the surface high is farther north this time. So if you take a look at what happened in central/southern IN that morning, it may be a decent guide to what happens in northern IL, but even colder potential.
  17. Tonight is gonna be fun. You kind of knew where the floor probably was this morning with winds staying up. Tonight, who knows.
  18. Getting a little burst of snow here now. Off the top of my head can't recall seeing snow at such a cold temp before.
  19. The popping sounds have actually startled me a couple times, lol.
