  1. Some heavy stuff upstream heading this way.
  2. Final total was 2.5" at ORD. They are at 49.5" for the season. Probably going to be the final number. Or will it?
  3. And what's crazy is that it didn't fall in the first week or something, when it's more climo favored.
  4. Chad Evans included these radar and velocity images in a writeup he did for the 25th anniversary of the 1994 West Lafayette F4 tornado. It is a reminder that although more discrete supercells tend to be associated with a higher share of the violent tornadoes, that is not always the case. This tornado passed through the northern and western portion of West Lafayette. 3 killed and dozens injured, but the outcome could very well have been even worse if it tracked farther south through the Purdue campus.
  5. Sleet/rain has transitioned to snow with colder surfaces whitening.
  6. 2.2" at RFD and 1.9" at ORD as of the top of the hour When ORD reaches 2", it will become the latest 2" calendar day snow on record and only the second 2" storm to occur so late in the season (May 1-2, 1940).
  7. Even with some underperformance, it is, relative to the calendar for northern IL. Numbers aren't biased.
  8. Car thermo, which might as well be a roving observation site because it is that good, has been hovering between 33-34. Even the lighter returns are mostly/all sleet now... the warm layer aloft must be very near 0C and thin.
  9. Sounds about right. Probably won't really feel like a warning criteria storm even where the totals hit 6"+... more like a snowboard warning criteria.
  10. Pretty heavy wind driven sleet. Again hard to believe it is April 27.
  11. Out driving and sleet is mixing in during this heavier burst.
  12. ORD had 0.4" as of a few hours ago. Even that small amount is the biggest snow this late in 30 years.
  13. Well, whatever the roads are like for the next several hours, the conditions should get worse after 6-7 pm or so as sunset gets closer. Should have heavy precip still occurring in N IL at that time.
  14. Any sign of it sticking on the pavement? Even when it was ripping like crazy here a little while ago, it was only sticking to colder surfaces. Probably would've needed a much longer duration.
  15. Rain/snow line sort of dips southeastward in northeast IL/far northwest IN
  16. Large flakes just pouring down now. Could be like this for a while looking at the band along the I-80 corridor.
  17. Mostly snow here, at least for now. This was sort of hinted at when looking at forecast soundings for evap cooling potential, with the suggestion being that a more definitive turn over to rain happens afterward (before finally changing to snow) as evap cooling runs out and just enough waa occurs, so we'll see if the transition back to rain actually occurs.
  18. Should get a period of pretty intense conditions later, even though amounts won't be like areas farther north. Exactly when this transition to all snow is complete around here is still a bit in flux. Do still think that the tier of counties to the south of LOT's current warning could have advisory type amounts/impacts, especially in the northern parts of the counties.
  19. Seems like it's having the problem that it sometimes has... being too warm/mixed near the surface, which in this case is capable of throwing off the precip type on that output.
  20. Regarding LOT, here are my thoughts. Gotta make the call with the overnight package on the counties in the current watch area. Personally I think the preponderance of the evidence argues for a warning. If not, then a beefy advisory at minimum with a very close eye on trends for possible upgrade to warning later this morning. The tier to the south where nothing is currently in effect may end up needing an advisory, at least for the northern portions of those counties. However, I'd be surprised to see them pull the trigger on that in the overnight package and there is more time to watch the trends for those counties.
