Be nice, people.

Based on attitudes, we can probably already predict that the United States will take longer to get this under control than just about any other major Western nation.
-
I guess. It appears it's going to be prioritized to healthcare workers and higher risk people first, but if the country is sitting on an unused supply, maybe it would open up to the rest of the general public more quickly?

Let's root for the GFS for Thanksgiving. A good chunk of this sub would at least be able to have the windows open.

Based on opinion polls, there's a lot of skepticism about the covid vaccine, but I wonder how the news about 90%+ efficacy could affect people's calculations. There's many factors though, like somebody's stance on vaccines overall, age/vulnerability, whether they know someone who has become seriously ill or died from covid, etc.

North Dakota put in a mask mandate.

Nice

Oh yeah, there has certainly been blowback from the right on Republican governors. We just had a Libertarian gubernatorial candidate finish in double digits in Indiana, which is a big showing for a third party. And that was after Gov Holcomb reopened everything in the state with the mask mandate being the only thing left in place, so there is dissatisfaction coming from that direction. I'm saying that I never saw tweets from Trump and co. that went after Holcomb for his restrictions. It seems like some kind of obsession has developed over Whitmer and one or two others.
-
Notice how they only tweet that kind of stuff at Democratic governors. We had all of the restrictions in Indiana back in spring, with a Republican governor, and there wasn't a peep out of them.
-
Just read through the Michigan order. It sounds quite a bit less restrictive than the spring, as places like salons, gyms, retail stores and K-8 schools will remain open. Still, people won't like it.

Yeah, it's a bit unpleasant if you happen to experience the flu-like side effects. Since it's a 2 shot thing, I wonder if it may deter some who experience those side effects from following up with the second shot. Full disclosure. I never get the flu vaccine. It is hit or miss, and I never really get the flu (if I've had it, then it's been really mild). When I've had other vaccines, I've been fortunate that the only side effect was some arm soreness.

Well, good thing that move won't trigger anybody in the great state of Michigan.

Rather than dealing in strange and unverified claims, there are a number of other things to find out about the Pfizer vaccine. One example: of the people who received the vaccine and still developed covid, did any of them develop a serious case of covid?

There was a 69 mph gust at Midway Airport this morning. Appears to be legit too even though it is quite a bit higher than other gusts around the area.

I'm trying to understand his angle. He (Angrysummons) doesn't seem to be broadly anti-vax, but is anti-Pfizer vax while claiming he has ties to the medical industry. Hence why I'm wondering if he's some disgruntled former Pfizer employee or something.

Starting to see signs of hoarding at the stores again. Calm down, people.

Washington state is cracking down. Though note farther down in the article that they admit they won't be able to enforce it for the Thanksgiving gatherings. Inslee, Sunday morning, ordered restaurants and bars to shutdown indoor service and to limit outdoor service to parties of five or less. Indoor gyms and fitness centers must also shutdown. Same with movie theaters, bowling alleys and museums. Indoor gatherings with people outside your household will be prohibited unless participants have quarantined for at least a week and tested negative. https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/health/gov-inslee-orders-sweeping-restrictions-on-indoor-gatherings-restaurants-bars-gyms-as-covid-19-cases-surge-in-washington-state/

If we don't hit it on Thursday, we almost certainly will on Friday.

I would like to take the opportunity to say that, besides reading a weather forum, you should consult with your doctor or another trusted person regarding any vaccine.

Were you fired from Pfizer or something?

The project itself is fine, but probably shouldn't have given it a name like that lol

This website is cool. It estimates the odds that somebody with covid will be present at gathering of a particular size, based on the county you're in. Obviously not perfect for a variety of reasons, one of which being that you can have people from higher risk counties coming into lower risk counties, but it gives an idea. You can play around with the number of people at a gathering and the ascertainment bias, which is the ratio of actual cases to confirmed cases. The ascertainment bias can't be set below 5:1 though, and it's certainly possible that not so many cases are being missed in some areas. I set the group size at 10 for this map. Even with a group size of 10, many counties have a rather significant risk of somebody with covid being present. Many are showing a 25-50% chance, some are 50-75% and a couple are 75-99%. An especially important consideration with the holidays coming up. https://covid19risk.biosci.gatech.edu

I'm a trust the science guy as well, but I'd still prefer to see that nothing turns up a little farther down the line as very large numbers of people are vaccinated. Heaven and earth have been moved to develop, test and produce vaccine, which is great, but I wonder about any potential very rare side effects that may be missed by the trials. Different thing, but my grandma once had a very serious complication from an injection in her back and spent months in the hospital. It was said to be a 1 in 10,000 occurrence. Well, it happens to somebody.

Let's discuss vaccines. Assuming it doesn't become mandated and that you have a say in the matter, will you get a covid-19 vaccine when it's available? My answer is... maybe. I understand they are going through the safety trials, but part of me wants to give it more time to see if anything weird turns up in a delayed fashion. Efficacy may also play a role. The 90%+ pronouncement about Pfizer's vaccine sounds very nice, but I want to learn more details about that and see if that holds up. Somebody like me likely wouldn't be able to get one before spring anyway, when the virus transmission rate should be going down. For me this may be more of a decision for next fall/winter.
