  1. The two questions with that would be 1) has anything changed with their testing rates and 2) how do the restrictions imposed there compare to the US
  2. Was inside my sister's house today for the first time in 8 months. Spent 3 hours there and never took off the mask. I actually wore 2 masks... a disposable and my other one that I wear regularly lol. As I've mentioned before, she is not great with being careful. She will wear a mask in public when she has to but frequently dines in at restaurants and occasionally goes to bars.
  3. Very hard to protect the elderly when there's widespread community spread. Obviously we're not doing a great job with that, because if we were, there would be a lot less deaths than what we're seeing.
  4. Covid Tracking had about 149k yesterday and 155k today. That site typically runs lower than worldometers. Worldometers had 162k yesterday and 156k and growing so far today.
  5. The scale on this graph reflects the upward trend in deaths better. Bottomed out around 700 per day earlier in Fall and now about 1200 per day. If you check some of the individual states especially in the Plains and Midwest, deaths have really increased lately... to April numbers or worse in some cases. It's coming for other regions too unless things tighten up. Knowledge and treatments have gotten better since April, but not sure how many additional strides have been made since, say, August/September.
  6. Certainly the potential to get even worse with Christmas and New Years, but let's see what happens in the next month. There may be enough people who are scared to leave home by then, especially in areas where the pandemic is really raging right now.
  7. Fort Wayne area is adding restrictions. https://wpta21.com/2020/11/17/new-allen-county-covid-19-restrictions-to-impact-bars-restaurants-and-events/
  8. The Tuesday death dump rears its head. 84 confirmed plus 5 probable for Indiana.
  9. Deaths right now are basically even with the peak of the summer wave and about to surpass. Unfortunately with the rapidly growing numbers as of late, we know where this is heading. In the spring we had days with over 2k deaths, but not 3k (unless it was a 1 day dump). I fear we are headed for some days of 3k this winter if we don't turn this around soon.
  10. This topic very easily wades into politics, but in reality, politics are not even supposed to be discussed at this board. We are really bending the rule in here sometimes. The blame game for covid has been done for like 9 months. What good does it do at this point? We know what's up. People are pretty well set in their ways. We have an administration that is on the way out and we need to figure out some way to curb this mess and not just wait around for the vaccine.
  11. That is a really irresponsible statement. I could understand if someone has a terminal illness and doesn't have much time left anyway, but otherwise...
  12. I'd almost rather take my chances with covid than eating Stove Top stuffing... or any stuffing. I could eat the other traditional Thanksgiving foods all day long.
  13. They both have risk, but imo the home gatherings are more risky than the trip to the grocery store. Homes are more confined and people tend to let their guard down around people they know. Plus, for Thanksgiving, you are typically in somebody's home for 3, 4, 5 hours, if not more.
  14. He did it all for the turkey, the turkey.
  15. I'm not terrified to leave the house, but I do have the sense that the virus is swarming and coming to get us all, especially in the northern states.
  16. It was 48k on Nov 2, so about a 25k increase in 2 weeks.
  17. 73k hospitalizations now nationwide. Hate to say it but 100k looks well within the realm of possibility by the end of this month.
  18. My cousin says her hospital is on bypass, which basically means that they are out of room and not accepting more patients.
  19. Was looking at the ICU data for Indiana, and the number of people in ICU with covid is starting to get closer to the number in ICU for all other causes. Not very close yet (749 in ICU with covid and 842 in ICU for something else) but it may only be a matter of time. At no point in the pandemic have there been more covid patients in ICU than non-covid patients, but it got very close back in April.
  20. Angrysummons, you really ought to cut it out with the mutate your genes posts. I have been more than fair up to this point. If you still choose to maintain those views yourself, so be it. I'm not the thought police.
  21. I was looking at it a different way. About 12%, or roughly 1 in 8 who received the placebo and got infected developed severe covid. We don't even have 8 total infections in the group who received the vaccine.
  22. This is an important aspect of the vaccine... how effective will it be at preventing serious/hospital level illness? We are dealing with pretty small numbers of infections on the placebo and vax sides (11 severe out of 90 infections for the placebo and 0 severe out of 5 infections for the vaccine) so the jury is still out on that one.
  23. The covid denialism is so bad that some people who are dying from covid refuse to acknowledge they are dying from covid. https://news.yahoo.com/south-dakota-er-nurse-recalls-151800579.html
  24. Look, nobody is forcing you to be in this thread if you don't like how it is run. You are a valuable contributor so I hope you'll stay. I am usually pretty hands off and let the discussion flow as long as it is reasonably on topic. We had a poster questioning one particular vaccine, not all vaccines, which is not a typical anti-vaxxer stance. I think the pushback was good and informative.
  25. Namecalling and personal insults don't accomplish anything. All you can do is present information to the "anti people" and hope they change their minds. The earlier episode about Pfizer actually turned into an enlightening discussion about vaccines. I knew next to nothing about vaccine minutiae and I learned some stuff from the links that were posted.
