1999 certainly ranks highly for Chicago snowstorms. I think it's hard to argue against GHD 2011 being the most impressive snowstorm in Chicago since snowfall records began. It's a little short of the largest storm on record, but the combination of snow total and winds is something that I'm not sure the city has seen any other time in the past 150 years or so. If something like 12/15/1987 had lasted a longer amount of time, that could've given GHD a run for its money. It had very intense conditions for a while but the total wasn't too impressive.

Exactly Before that storm, I really couldn't comprehend in my mind what a foot and a half or 2 foot snowstorm would look like, because I had never seen one before. The first one of that scale is always more special. If I had been where I am now for GHD 2011, that one would've dethroned 1999, but I wasn't, so 1999 is still my personal favorite.

Chicago, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Detroit and Toronto all had 10"+... some of those places way more than 10". What other storm does that?

Running out of time for substantial northward shifts. Looks like very little in the city and north. The shot at 3-5" would be toward the southeastern LOT cwa.

Based on reports and photos, it looks like there was a band of a quarter to a third of an inch of ice in the LOT cwa, mainly south of I-80. If the meltoff is minimal tomorrow, there may be renewed concerns depending what the Sat night/Sun system does. Hopefully that stuff would be a little higher ratio than this.

Snowing decently

It's funny... when I was looking at it I thought that it reminded me of 2/5/11. Just how it looks and where it's coming from. So I checked CIPS out of curiosity and guess what showed up as the #1 analog? 2/5/11.

The system late Saturday into Sunday has overachiever written on it. Nice deepening/neg tilted with some decent lapse rates to work with. Thermal profiles could be better but I could envision an area of 3-5" and not entirely out of the realm of possibility to flirt with warning criteria in some spots, imo.

Finally went a tad above freezing.

Quincy is down to 1/2 mile vis.

Relatively quick hitting inch or two looks good around here. Even if temps go a little above freezing, don't think it will matter that much as it will be snowing onto an icy/slushy layer.

Our old "friend" the LAF ASOS is reporting freezing rain at 35/34. That's a pretty good trick.

Still holding at freezing here. I would've bet money on temps going above 32 by now, given multi-model progs and concern about just enough of a marine influence to help nudge temps higher. Could still poke above freezing in the coming hours but there won't be any diurnal help to do it rather soon.

As far as whether the CFS look has a chance to verify, I think it's gonna come down to how much damage is done in the first week or two of the month because it does look better with time. Happy New Year to you and everyone as well.

Over 10k outages now in that swath south of us. Fairly respectable number considering it's mostly a bunch of small towns or rural areas.

Tricky/marginal to say the least. Most of northwest Indiana has held tough with temps at freezing. lol at Rockford

Went outside and there's definitely not any current dripping of the icicles from the trees and power lines. There were some decent gusts while I was outside so that would've blown anything watery. Still in nuisance territory with the amount of accretion here but wouldn't take much more to start causing some concern, especially if not much melts and we bring in some wet snow later.
