  1. Thanks for posting that. 4/3/1974 is arguably the most notorious weather date in history. Say the date to most weather enthusiasts anywhere and they will be able to immediately recognize it as the Super Outbreak or at least be able to come up with the answer after thinking about it for a minute.
  2. Tom Skilling remembers Mike Hamernik: On another note, I hadn't watched any new clips of Skilling in a long time. He is looking noticeably thinner these days... good for him.
  3. GFS is hitting a freezing rain threat around here with the early week storm. If it occurs, I suspect impacts would be more of an elevated object thing given the recent warm spell and lack of cold air going in.
  4. Beating an old record in style RECORD EVENT REPORT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CHICAGO IL 1240 AM CST THU MAR 11 2021 ...RECORD HIGH MINIMUM TEMPERATURE SET AT CHICAGO-OHARE... THE LOW TEMPERATURE OF 57 DEGREES AT CHICAGO-O`HARE ON WEDNESDAY SET A NEW RECORD HIGH MINIMUM TEMPERATURE FOR MARCH 10TH. THE PREVIOUS RECORD OF 52 DEGREES OCCURRED IN 1876.
  5. I still have the windows open. Really howling out there.
  6. Noticed the trees budding here too. Apparently they didn't look at the extended forecast.
  7. ORD has been 69'd for 2 days in a row (get your minds out of the gutter people)
  8. Should a family be allowed to write something like this in a public obituary when autopsy results aren't in? https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/name/kassidi-kurill-obituary?pid=197924552 Here's the story behind it: https://kutv.com/amp/news/local/utah-woman-39-dies-4-days-after-2nd-does-of-covid-19-vaccine-autopsy-ordered
  9. There are some caveats here but this was tested against real world virus samples taken from people, not lab manufactured. A new lab study shows troubling signs that Pfizer's and Moderna's COVID-19 shots could be far less effective against the variant first found in South Africa https://www.yahoo.com/news/pfizer-modernas-covid-19-shots-174512012.html
  10. On that subject... April has outsnowed March in Chicago 3 years in a row. That is the first time that a streak like that has happened.
  11. Same thing at Midway... high of 69 which tied the daily record from 1974.
  12. I read through the CDC guidelines for vaccinated people, and they actually did differentiate between non-vaccinated lower risk people and non-vaccinated higher risk people. They are advising vaccinated people to still mask up when visiting non-vaccinated higher risk people, which makes sense given their conservative approach to things. Fully vaccinated people can: Visit with other fully vaccinated people indoors without wearing masks or physical distancing Visit with unvaccinated people from a single household who are at low risk for severe COVID-19 disease indoors without wearing masks or physical distancing Refrain from quarantine and testing following a known exposure if asymptomatic For now, fully vaccinated people should continue to: Take precautions in public like wearing a well-fitted mask and physical distancing Wear masks, practice physical distancing, and adhere to other prevention measures when visiting with unvaccinated people who are at increased risk for severe COVID-19 disease or who have an unvaccinated household member who is at increased risk for severe COVID-19 disease https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/fully-vaccinated-guidance.html
  13. Who knew that some guy on Twitter called TheLawyerCraig would become a go-to source for covid info.
  14. Not sure anyone in this crowd will be eager to get a vaccine
  15. My snowpile in the shade is still hanging on even with a high of 67. Some leftover snow also remains in shaded areas adjacent to people's houses.
  16. From the LOT afd.... pretty unbelievable Our stretch of above-normal temperatures has also come with no precipitation, with the last instance of such on February 28. In fact, never in our records has the first 8 days of March featured no precipitation in Chicago! The same is not true in Rockford as several years featured measurable precipitation on the 1st of March.
  17. Come on ORD, what's the matter with you? You don't want to get to the mid 60s? Wonder if there is some effect with the winds advecting in off of the lingering snowpack to the west.
  18. Sure, but don't you find it surprising that the CDC would be saying that visiting with an unvaccinated 15 year old kid is just as fine as visiting with a 68 year old obese diabetic who hasn't been able to get a vaccine yet? That is seemimgly what they are saying right now, unless their position is more nuanced and it's just a crappy summary by The Hill. Certainly a possibility.
  19. Obviously. But there's the incubation period where you don't know you have it. Or if you have very mild symptoms you may think it isn't covid, especially if you've been vaccinated.
  20. The last sentence in that paragraph is a potential problem, imo. Would like to see some clarification on that. If you happen to have a vaccinated person with mild covid (since the vaccines aren't 100% effective in preventing mild illness) who is visiting with a more vulnerable, unvaccinated person, that person could be in trouble.
  21. I think it's just wait and see mode. Definitely possible there could soon be a period of time when the variant spread outpaces our ability to vaccinate and results in rising case numbers and perhaps hospitalizations, but until then, the downward trends are nice to see.
  22. We want to see Tuesday too, right? Yeah we do.
  23. There's been discrepancies all throughout between CDC data and other websites. Even going back a couple months, the CDC had peak hospitalizations at 125k while Covid Tracking had it at 132k. If somebody can explain the reason for the differences, please do tell.
  24. Good to know. Haven't really been paying attention.
