  1. It's because the weather is the one escape from the hellscape that is life.
  2. Let's save it for next year. I don't want some rogue 12" - 16" event that's gone in 48 hours.
  3. This is a phenomenal write up, and it's obvious you went through a lot to collate the information, thank you. I have two follow up questions for BWI. 1.) Would it be possible to re-run the data for 10 inch or greater events? 2.) Would it be possible to re-run the data for days when the high temperatures was at or below 32 degrees at BWI? I'm curious to see if there is any strong correlation for cold weather.
  4. I think @Bob Chilland @psuhoffman mentioned this before. Worth a read:
  5. My brother was born 12/19/89 in Philly. The hospital delayed letting our parents take him home by 2 days because it was so cold out. My dad still says it was the coldest he can rever remember it being in his now 67 years on this planet.
  6. Watch out for pickup trucks in the terminal
  7. There were 3 major NESIS storms during the period.
  8. If you live where the red X is, then I've drafted for a few fires near your house of Ebbvale and Fridinger Mill Rds...it's like another world up there in the winter. Super legit.
  9. The grocery industry is being destroyed by the yuppies who frequent Wegmans and Whole Foods. You're seeing food deserts now emerge in a lot of rural and urban low income areas alike. I always hoped, growing up, the future would be good, instead it's a dumpster fire of warm winters and expensive crapola.
  10. Union Bridge and New Windsor have terrible water systems. If you want better snow climo and views, NE Carroll County and northern Baltimore County can't be beat locally.
  11. I was in Philly for Christmas break...it was almost pure WAA/frontogenesis snow. Just beautiful because the forecast amounts from CTP and PHI kept creeping up during the 24 hours leading up to the event.
  12. You aren't missing anything here. Your obs in TX will beat us hands down next spring.
  13. FYI, Snow Squall Warnings (SSW) will now show up in RadarScope and GR as a storm based warning. Be sure to up date your radar app if you have not already done so.
  14. I wish those threads still existed. I was in PA at the time and the snow came in like a wall. It was great.
  15. It was today 10 years ago that we knew a fun storm was coming. What a winter that was. EDIT: It's a damn, damn shame all the 09-10 threads on Eastern have died. So much was lost.
  16. New leadership in NOVA. Loudoun probably will follow suite next year.
  17. You will see a substantial decrease in FCPS school/gov closings going forward.
  18. The only better snow climo is probably the Catoctin Mts. (Thurmont, Sabillasville, Highfield-Cascade) excellent fishing too.

  20. Good site to bookmark. The maps are usually updated every 12 hours during an event: CC: @mappy https://www.weather.gov/lwx/ObservedWeatherMaps
  21. For those of you invested in this event, you might want to start looking to western MD...already some mPING reports in Garrett County of SN and the 0.5° CC on Sterling's radar is showing the melting layer creeping closer. Oakland airport is also down to 34°, which is several degrees lower than forecast.
  22. We discuss these events every year at the COG and OPM meetings. It's the number one event to cripple an area. Some weak sauce that clipper or fropa that's in a cold airmass with high ratio snow that just overperforms by like an inch or two.
  23. The key difference was the road temperatures at the time. When you start with roads below 32° and rush hour, the snow accumulates, the tires melt it, then it re-freezes in black ice. It's been documented across the country. This time we have warm roads so I don't see a problem, but $20 say we get a cover-your-a$$ WWA around 4:00 pm.
  24. It's a Potential Hazard Commuting Statement which is part of the NWS initiative to highlight weather that would have a particular impact on commutes in urban areas. It's a result of the Jan 27, 2011 and Jan 20, 2016 events which royally jacked the roads up and people wrongfully blamed NWS for because we can't understand that it sometimes snows in the winter.
