  1. Eric Horst just announced his retirement as director Meteorology at MU. He's going to do some weather consulting and expand on his rock climbing business. Our area will miss his local expertise, and no one in here will have to listen to me any longer about him. Wait - he did say that he'll continue to talk weather on Twitter.
  2. It's become divisive because with every tropical system that impacts the U.S., a bunch of posters from NY will chime in and start making comparisons from that particular system to Sandy. Some people from outside of that area are so sick of hearing about Sandy all the time they've asked if the name "Sandy" can be banned from use on these forums.
  3. It is sort of an interesting "civil war" here on the boards with Sandy. My wife and I spent a week volunteering on Long Island to help with relief efforts. What we saw and experienced is something that I'll never forget. I can understand the emotion and respect given to that storm from the people who actually lived through it. Having said that - my wife also went to Houston to help with relief efforts after Harvey. Can't really compare the two storms, but on a very personal level they were remarkably similar. The personal toll and devastation was very raw, very real at the human level. In both situations, the emotional response from the residents was something special. My wife's team was rebuilding a home in Pearland - people that were obviously complete strangers, but for that family to have an army of volunteers to come in to their home and clean up and rebuild was equally special and emotional for my wife and her team to help as it was for the family whose home they rebuilt. It's sort of a shame that Sandy has become almost divisive. When a storm, any storm, affects YOUR neighborhood and YOUR livelihood, it becomes very personal. Sure, it's easy and "fun" to compare storms and their effects but I wish people would just be respectful and understanding when people share their feelings because to them - it's personal. For those that went through Sandy - Sandy is the benchmark. For those living in Tuscaloosa back in 2011 (my wife also provided relief there) it's personal. For those in Houston who went through Harvey - it's personal. Let's respect that and resist saying that my storm was worse than yours was. It's sort of pointless at that level.
  4. But it will be much worse since the skyscrapers in NYC are taller and therefore will have far more windows blown out.
  5. I'm feeling overly optimistic that @Bubbler86 @Cashtown_Coop @CarlislePaWx @sauss06 @Anduril @canderson @paweather @paweather5 and all of the Lanco peeps are going to get some decent rain in the next 36 hours. I'll define "decent" as > .25". I know a lot of you measure rainfall as I do so we'll see how this goes. @Blizzard of 93 - you're going to jackpot with 2" - just think of what that might translate to in 4 months... 2" of cold rain.
  6. Historic Maytown is going to be lucky to see anything. What a colossal collapse of that line...
  7. New severe thunderstorm watch up for a large part of the CTP area, particularly west of the river. Nasty line of storms moving rather quickly SE out of west central PA right now. Cell south of Dubois looks interesting.
  8. I am getting sustained temps above 90 right now...currently 91.2 and rising. Day #41!
  9. This is true. I remember having a conversation years ago with Sam Perugini, who was a professor of meteorology at Penn State. At the time he had a forecast for 6-12" of snow for my area, and I excitedly responded about getting up to a foot of snow. He smiled at me and simply said "don't forget my forecast starts with a 6". Simple I know, but that resonated with me from that day forward. Also - people see a few pictures or a 30 second video and make definitive conclusions about "how lame" a storm is. As many intelligent people are saying, the worst part of the storm went right over the swamp where there isn't a whole lot of people nor a whole lot of buildings, and thus...not a whole lot of pictures and video to view. Thus - "it wasn't that bad" mentality sets in with some.
  10. A few weenies are throwin' a fit this morning all disappointed that there wasn't total cataclysmic destruction in Lake Charles overnight. Some dude just called out the NWS for being irresponsible and over-hyping Laura. Fortunately, CoastalWx from New England came by and basically told them to STFU. I guess short of seeing corpses float by during live streams, Laura will forever be known as a bust to some people.
  11. That Chicago Storm dude was a little unfair to him - NJWX kept asking nicely if someone (including Chicago man) had more up to date maps to please post them. All he got in response was ugly sarcasm. People like that seriously bother me - don't complain unless you have something better in return. All he had was ugliness.
  12. In an era when everything seems to be sensationalized by the media, I fear that Laura is going to cause a lot of heartache over the next 24 hours. Our anniversary plans getting ruined = inconvenience. People who live down that way = livelihoods altered potentially for many years to come.
  13. So one year ago today, my wife and I made plans to vacation on Galveston Island arriving today and leaving on a western Caribbean cruise tomorrow. Once Covid hit and crippled the cruise lines, we cancelled all of our reservations. At the time, it was disheartening to do so... Interesting how things turn out...
  14. One of the most accurate, telling questions I've ever heard. Normal right now sounds extraordinarily nice.
  15. Quietly back at home, a potentially active period of severe weather (especially for late August) is in store for parts of PA, with at least a slight risk of severe storms each of the next 3 days at least. CTP is really ramping up wording for tomorrow for those north of I-80 and to the east of IPT. Winds greater than 75 mph, hail larger than 2", and a few tornadoes of EF2 or stronger are all possible.
  16. A few more storms are forming in north central PA and moving SE - we have a couple more hours until we're completely out of the woods.
