  1. Yes it is - this really escalated quickly. Wife reports the yard and mulch is caving to hail as well.
  2. I noticed yesterday that Amtrak was reducing speeds on the NE corridor due to the extreme heat.
  3. The 1980s were awful - thank god for the blizzard of 1983 because outside of that...it was torture watching cirrus above while the southern Piedmont got smoked.
  4. Thanks. I would never have guessed that was the case. My memory says that winter highs in the teens/low 20s was a somewhat common occurrence prior to 2000 but much more infrequent since. I feel like in recent years we don't even have that many sub-freezing highs outside of stormy days. (which would explain why bodies of water never seem to freeze over anymore)
  5. These quotes speak to the spirit of the conversation I was trying to have a month or so ago, primarily with Bubbler: Normal high in mid January is 36 - how many January days feature highs around 50? Normal high for mid July is 87 - how many July days feature highs around 101? Both are equal in terms of their respect to normal. But this kind of heat in mid summer "seems" much more rare than a 50 degree day in January.
  6. If I can get to 102.2 (current reading is 100.7) it will be the hottest day since we moved to Maytown in 2000.
  7. I noticed that shortly after that comment, he said he's looking forward to the temporary break from the heat. I'm guessing he isn't in the "no more big heat in July" camp.
  8. Elliott: Severe weather likely tomorrow, longer-term the drought likely gets much worse: https://www.millersville.edu/weathercenter/forecasts/weather-discussion.php
  9. Heading for work - it's 97 at 1pm. I don't recall being this close to 100 this early in the day since the mid 1990s.
  10. That was my thought. I didn't see anything evident on radar except for the NE corner of the state.
  11. I wasn't going to post this because I wasn't sure what my purpose was in doing so, and I was even more unsure what anyone would or could possibly say... I'm working nights this week. Last night when I left the office at 11pm I was greeted by wind. Howling winds...trees were swaying, road sign was shaking on the pole, our American flag was straight out. I don't want to exaggerate and I'm not good at guessing wind speeds. All that to say, I know enough to know that the wind was blowing at least 35mph. Easy. Sky was perfectly clear, nearest precip was 150 miles away. The wind lasted approximately 5 minutes. Why?
  12. Definitely an asterisk since it didn't happen at home. Storm was warned when it went through.
  13. Heavy rain, wind and some small hail now...here at work. Cell is just clipping me, the worst is a mile or so south of here. Absolutely no thunder that I've heard.
  14. Cell formed over I83 in York County - was headed directly at me. Got to the river less than 2 miles from home and just disintegrated. Ugh. Wasn't expecting rain today but got a little invested in that cell only to be let down again. Sort of like being an Orioles fan.
  15. I've been loyal for years. I pay a little more but appreciate a local business that emphasizes quality.
