Central PA Autumn 2023

Arapahoe Basin in CO had measurable snow 3 weeks ago, and it's snowed several times since. And of course, the 6" that fell on that "Big" mountain out in CA. -

I think that is basically 3 years ago - I did not shovel during the winters of 2021-22 and 2022-23. This approaching winter is the 3rd since that storm. It's like referring to 2010 to 2020 as a 10 year period...it's actually 11. Sometimes that confuses me and I love numbers. -

Never been there so no help but want to say get well soon. My wife was sick back at the end of August and it took weeks for her to get her strength back...every time she'd exert herself she could tell that she wasn't right yet. Take it easy... -

79 here as well - hasn't gotten above 80 here over the past 4 days which has been a pleasant surprise. I imagine I'll tack on a couple of degrees this afternoon and reach 81-82 or so. But you're right, just stepped outside after an all-morning meeting and it feels like the mid 80s to me. -

For all of the baseball fans, here's a shocker! https://www.si.com/fannation/mlb/fastball/news/umpire-angel-hernandez-finishes-regular-season-with-worst-rating-in-mlb 161 missed calls in 10 games? That's big league stuff right there! -

I haven't either. I think we're going to do well this year. Also just a hunch with a positive spin because; well, I'm 58 years old and have never gone this long without shoveling. We're due. -

Currently it's 82 at home. Also - this: Looking ahead into the upcoming weekend, our stretch of warm and tranquil weather is going to come to a screeching halt. A vigorous cold front will cross the Commonwealth on Saturday and bring several bands of showers to the region. Depending on the timing of the frontal passage, a few rumbles of thunder and wind gusts up to 40 mph could accompany the heaviest showers. Given the time of year, it would take an afternoon or early-evening frontal passage for these threats to materialize.. and that's certainly possible on Saturday! In the wake of the front, gusty, west-to-northwesterly winds will usher much cooler and drier air into the mid-Atlantic States for the second half of the weekend and start of next week. High temperatures may struggle to reach the low 60s both Sunday and Monday afternoons, and wind gusts up to 30 mph will give an added chill to the outdoor air. Overnight lows should be much closer to average early next week, or generally in the mid-to-upper 40s. Fortunately, I don't expect any rain to accompany the chillier conditions, but you'll still need to trade in this week's shorts and T-shirts for long pants and jackets. With a trough, or dip in the Jet Stream, and upper-level expected to linger over the Northeast and southeastern Canada through much of next week, don't expect a return of this week's unseasonable warmth through the end of next week. Temperatures should moderate slightly during the middle-to-latter part of next week, but highs probably won't exceed the 70-degree mark. Welcome to fall! -- Elliott -

That was exactly what I questioned/theorized yesterday - will October follow the same pattern as it's predecessor? We'll know in 4 weeks. -

I agree with you 100% on this as well...with the caveat that you're also going to share any and all record lows that might be set going forward. -

Our oldest son is home from Houston again, so we had all the kids over last night for dinner. I heard our one daughter say to my wife in the kitchen "mom, why is it still so cold in here?" I smiled broadly in the living room. -

@Mount Joy Snowman - you were a little shaky in completing the assigned mission, but ultimately you got the job done. Welcome back! -

I actually think that I "was taught" at some point many, many years ago that it was the first warm stretch of weather that followed the first frost of the season. I was surprised by how many interpretations there are of the "phenomena". LOL -

It depends on which definition you personally like - I was going to use the term in a post yesterday but stopped myself for the same reason you alluded to; however, Weather historian William R. Deedler wrote that "Indian summer" can be defined as "any spell of warm, quiet, hazy weather that may occur in October or November," -

@TimB -CXY is notoriously the warmest location in the LSV and ironically, it also sits immediately adjacent to the Susquehanna, but it's on the west side of the river and with the prevailing wind direction, it would not be influenced by the water.
