2024-2025 Fall/Winter Mountain Thread

Woke up to a thick dusting, howling winds-27 here now in Jefferson. Weak flurries still blowing around. Probably our last little thump before spring. -

Clouds rolling in...sitting at 39 ATM...got that snowy feeling here, IYKYK. -

Believe that area will be the best with this one. Swing by Al Forno's and grab some pizza. Probably nothing over 4" west of 95. Not expecting over 3" here in the far NW corner of the state. Be safe, and hope everyone can cash in on a snow day! -

Maybe push that east about 60-75 miles...but there will be a sweet spot, but IMO not there, but who knows...maybe the sweet spot will be in your area. -

That looks like it...maybe a little more along the NW Blue Ridge, with higher totals isolated into the NE. Wake area still looks to get a snowday, just not sure how much of that will be ZR/IP. -

Still looks like the sweetspot will be points E/NE of I-85...good time to visit Elizabeth City. -

LOL, I grew up with Frank Deal's jokes and the sliding wood boards with the felt...like I was back in Sunday school. They have a tough job, especially with this one...models all over the place. Hoping for some convergence on the runs today. -

Indeed...I'm sure sometimes they dip down into ours and then post....man the meltdown in the SE weenie hut is insane! I'm sure they have a banter thread too! Weather forecasting is tough...even with satellites and AI super computers...locals out in the backwoods here will just say, "We'll get what we get!" And they keep pumping along. Enjoy the ride folks! -

Excellent synopsis! We are planning a trip down to Alamance county Thursday and my friends had been ready to pull the plug all week...I kept saying, "Let's just wait." I'm the skeptic (unfortunately in most things) in the crew. I hope that your mindset is that of our local mets, who go on the air each and every day and have to communicate their evaluation to their audience. We appreciate them, but I'm sure it's a tough job. Reminds me of a Far Side cartoon...man was standing with the devil...devil is pointing at two doors...the doors have signs.."Damned if you do." and "Damned if you don't." (Google it: far side damned if you do) Be safe folks and enjoy the ride! -

Yep, the LP out of Texas with that warm front coming out of the Gulf of Mexico will be increasing the clouds today...maybe some snow this weekend too. Be safe everyone and have a great weekend! -

28 here in the Todd area...HWY 194 from Baldwin (West Jefferson) to Todd is in poor condition. Fleetwood area roads were also in poor condition with lots of patchy ice on the roads. Accretion is very noticeable on the vegetation...IMO we're quickly approaching the line between 'no-problem' and 'problem'. Be safe everyone. -
Indeed, we've been working along HWY 88 between West Jefferson and areas west...Creston, Warrensville, Potterstown...and it's still in poor condition from the hurricane. Thanks for sharing the runs...looks like they're converging along the BRP. If those totals verify, we're gonna have some power outages for a bit. Currently here in NW Watauga it's calm-birds at the feeders seem frantic-they know something's coming. Be safe everyone.

Quiet and eerie atm...any updates on expected ice totals? Heard someone at the store talking about .75" up to 1.0" of ice in Ashe...been out of the loop a few days with the flu.

Been snowing heavy here in NW Watauga since about 2...about 2" or more and everything's covered again...gonna lock in for a few days, and wait around for more. Snow has turned sideways now, some winds and heavy rates. How is it in Eastern TN...near Mountain City/Johnson City areas? -
Just wanted to note here, is there any way to verify this? Sometime between 7 and 8:15 PM on Friday, January 10 during the snow-I heard a loud boom, sounded from the sky. It caught me off guard…was like, is that thundersnow? I also thought maybe my grandson knocked over a piece of furniture inside-as I was in the mudroom, I was hoping it was thundersnow but not sure if we have the means to verify this over NW Watauga County between 7 PM and 8:15 PM. My girlfriend heard the same sound twice at a later time probably between 10 and midnight about 20 miles to the northeast in Central Ashe County. Does anyone have a database for lightning strikes that it would have occurred during that time in that area?

First bit of sun poking through now, still snowing pretty good...very tiny flakes, maybe about 6" on the ground. Winds strong. -

Seems like a while since we had a solid MA punching up snow...anyone remember the last solid MA that yielded a lot of snow? -

Solid snow coming down flakes smaller than a dime, but it’s snowing pretty good here in northern Watauga county near the Ashe County line.
