October Discussion: Bring the Frost-Hold the Snow
PhineasC replied to 40/70 Benchmark's topic in New England
Feel like I am seeing way more spiders this year than last. We need a hard freeze here. The insects start getting weird when that doesn’t happen on schedule. -

Got up above the clouds today. It was actually pretty pleasant up there. Sunny and lower 50s with little wind. -

Sometimes people who grew up poor, self-sufficient, and blue collar have trouble “bothering” someone else with the work, even for payment. I know I had that issue for a long time and still do sometimes. I have to keep telling myself these folks are looking for the work and want to do it so they can make some money. It’s not a burden on them to ask them to do it. -

Ah, peak leaf color and beautiful weather in the north country means getting tailgated by a dude in a minivan with NY plates angrily weaving behind and then passing me as I go 10 over the speed limit. -
Damn, that is a story for sure. My suggestion would be next time make sure the kids dial 911 instead, but you are lucky the number they dialed still got through to a couple of strong local bubbas with medical training. In all seriousness, glad you got it sorted out and knew when to call for help.

Hope you remain well for a long time to come, Tamarack. Your insights on NNE climo and forestry topics are always on point and helpful.

It’s a good vantage point to survey the destruction wrought by the endless New England summer climo. -

64/53 with breezes. Feels really nice. Just about perfect for a trip up to a summit to take pics. -

I would take some snow (always), but it's pretty meaningless until mid-to-late November here, which is when more consistent snow cover can start. Cold is more important given the snowmaking at the resorts. I hope cold starts to set in by early November. Still no frost here. I had mosquitoes landing on me yesterday. -

PF invited me up last winter to "enjoy some sweet powder" but the address he gave me was a dingy office in Burlington and he is actually a pot-bellied guy in his late 50s who wears Hawaiian shirts and cargo shorts all winter and refuses to take off his sunglasses, even indoors. It was kinda weird but he said not to tell anyone that it's been a lie all these years. Had some top-shelf cocaine though. -

Yeah, maybe it depends on the species, but the oaks I am used to never do anything interesting. -

A least someone in New England does. Seems many up here should just move south and get it over with. You don't even need to go to FL. At my place in MD it will be 50-60 degrees and sunny most of December and then again by mid-February onwards most years. -
Seems to be near peak here. Mostly yellow and orange with some reds mixed in. Not as many fiery reds this year it seems. Every year is probably a little different based on a million different variables. Some seriously deep oranges erupting now. The weather is finally clearing enough to get some better shots. We will take the camera out tomorrow and try to get something representative. It pisses me off that I can't seem to ever get a picture that really captures what I am seeing.

I think it was a mirage. Combo of the heat and the soaked ground creating visual distortions off the hot asphalt. -

If I tried to take that picture it would look like this for some reason.
