  1. I don't know, I didn't glance up, because that area is just used for canoeing?
  2. Newport is a pretty poor place, despite its image. People actually live here year round, and their median income is low. I'm enjoying the model battle as a spectator with no skin in the game.
  3. Ive spent three years in Spain and their service is way more varied than that. I would say cafe and restaurant service is comparable to here easily. The culture is different but the service is equal, perhaps more professional due to the ages of those involved and the fact that they can live on the wages they make. Other places, the trains for instance... Slow. Well, no, the trains are fast, the ticketing and customer service is slow. Now, you travel there, or especially France during tourist season, and you won't get their normal employees, because they don't work for tips, and they have mandated and significant pto because they live in a civilized manner. Then, you might get horrible service. Because no one, at all, wants to be working when everyone they know is on vacation. The part I'm falling down on us enjoying the scenery. Most of America's restaurants are in strip malls. If someone has the misfortune to be at an Applebee's receiving horrible service, what is their recourse, to look at a parking lot, stare at 4 lanes of surface streets, and bemoan the car culture?
  4. So as far as I can see, this was Newports record ever one-day storm total at 21", just edging out '78 for the top spot. To give a frame of reference, this is double an average January total of snow, and is two thirds of an average yearly snowfall. I'll remember this forever. I've had bigger snowfalls when I lived in upstate new York, many of them. But it matters more when its an underdog. I'm absolutely exhausted from the whole day, and the fact that this is my kids first ever proper snowstorm is amazing. He could not fathom how much snow there was, or what could be done with it.
  5. I don't know why it matters to me that Newport verified a blizzard, but it does. Anyone know where I can see location specific snowfall records? I only know where to find it broken out into months historically.
  6. Just got back from cross country skiing. Went straight down Broadway, amazing.
  7. Back door completely snowed in due to drifting. As soon as the wind dies a little more I'm going to remove the fire hazard.
  8. This is going to be a top 5 all time for much of RI, for sure. It'll be the best storm I've had in a decade here.
  9. Actual blizzard conditions for the last half hour. Huge huge flakes finally after a lot of shattered ones.
  10. Yeah, for the last half hour I've been thinking ... Am I, am... I in a death band? Even this morning, the dry slot was like, Charlestown to scituate.
  11. The fact that I haven't found a way to really be in any great subsidence for any period of time is actually a type of cognitive dissonance for me. This is a great storm, its too bad it wasn't more of a regionwide storm. Ive been out a couple times and reconsidered. Definitely not verifying a blizzard but it's only pleasant to face in one direction.
  12. Snow measurements impossible. Bare grass and 3 foot tall piles. Wind is shredding the flakes. What a scene. If I had to guess, somewhere around 5 or 6 inches, but it's a guess.
  13. Brightening up, first real bit of dry air seems to be opening up as two bands consolidate to the west. Wind is increasing. Can't really read how this will evolve for me based on radar entirely.
  14. My stubborn neighbor is doing some shoveling. Lol. What exactly is the point. It's like raking leaves during a tornado.
  15. My observation is... Hnnnnggghhhhhhh! Love this band.
  16. This is like how the most obsessive of audiophiles don't really enjoy music.
  17. All I can say is good luck measuring. My kid just asked to look at the radar. Future weenie stuff.
  18. The instability is great to watch on radar. Mesolows galore out to sea as everything blossoms.
  19. Absolutely. It seems to be forming in the place they always form. It's the oddest thing!
  20. With this band coming in now wind has picked up. Occasional gusts to 30. Nothing crazy here yet but the first real noreaster feeling I've had in years. Snow is already blowing nicely.
  21. Good luck. I'm sticking with my understated 9" idea for lowly Newport. No doubt you'll do better. I buy the idea that we will just staying out of the good business from the east, and I have never not seen a death band to the west that is showing up in more detailed modeling. That's every storm I've seen with a classic track. I hope I'm wrong, because it would be good for everyone, but even if I make it to that amount, it'll blow my son's mind with the drifting and wind. I'm done now. At some point you have to look out the window, and now's the time for me. Hope it doesn't disappoint too many, and people actually get out in it!
  22. I totally buy a death band in the typical place west of here creating problems for me. What I don't buy is the odd wobble as the storms recenters eastward. I'll be interested to watch it happen though.
