  1. Dude, that's even worse than mine. I was in Nashville for the blizzard of '93. Picked that week to move from Old Hickory to a place near downtown. March seemed like a pretty safe weather time for a big move. Rented a big old diesel UHaul for the occasion. "Freezing in the dark" took on a new meaning for me. Driving along with a full load, and the diesel fuel turned to jello. There I was, on the side of the road, with a tank full of useless fuel, and no cellphone, of course. I learned way more than I ever wanted to about diesel engines and glowplugs that night.
  2. Built the greenhouse myself, so I never have to heat it. It's fine down to 10F. If it's going to get down to 5F, I put a little 250 watt heater in there, just to make myself feel better. No problems the five winters since I built it. But at minus 5, all bets are off. I really hope I'm misreading that map!
  3. Forgive me, but what is this map predicting? -5 degrees in DC? My greenhouse would be under severe pressure!
  4. Here, take my upvote! Where's the 'like' button?
  5. Ground's cold here. We still have some snow on the ground from Friday.
  6. Yep, not a good time. We had young children. We also had the only woodstove in the neighborhood. Luckily, we had a pretty big living room, because we had several families with very young children camped out in that room for a week. This was a stone's throw from downtown Nashville. If you've never been in a real ice storm, trust me: it's not like wishing for a nice big snow storm. You really don't want an inch of ice all over everything.
  7. I just saw a forecast low of 11 degrees for Monday, Feb 08. Is that real? Likely to change? Should I buy a propane heater for my greenhouse, just in case?
