I remember growing up in the 50’s, my father saying that it was cold enough to snow or too cold to snow. Knowing little more than I do now about the machinations of the atmosphere I hung onto the 12 inch Magnavox weather forecasts or the radio. I would get so angry when it was so cold because invariably I’d hear the same radio refrain; “increasing cloudiness and milder”. The weather guy on Dave Garroways today show would say, we need one of these lows to the south to plug into one of these cold highs over us to get snow. Such, as a child was I satisfied. Now, in the last of my years, hearing what it takes to get snow to the coastal plain I think of such simplicity as nostalgic and endearing. Thank you for the memory ORH. Stay well, as always … -
Hello Liberty, I pray all is well with you. In college, over 55 years ago, a group of us were moaning at the decline of popular fish like the porgy, flounder, whiting, sheepshead. A fellow in the group mentioned he was a diver and said lobster's were in the channel leading into Sheepshead Bay, he mentioned some were a good size. I doubt you would find them today. Stay well, Liberty, as always ….

Good evening Don, EJ. I read a post in the New England sub forum referring to the increasing average length of first to last freeze in Boston. D I T asked the non jocular speculative question will we see the first frost free year in our lifetime. I thought, sadly, living in NYC, that the Big Baked Apple will likely do it first. Stay well, as always ….

Good afternoon t o g p, S 74. Very true regarding urban temperature and heat within a building. Living in a 140 year old row house, i remember… my lost love was complaining that the rooms were cold not too long after the steam heat had come up. I remember her saying “where is all the damn heat going”. Our floor had 12 foot ceilings, which was customary for the parlor floor of those buildings. I got my aluminum step ladder and asked her to climb up as far as she could and tell me how it feels. I believe she thought I had lost a brick or two from the chimney but she humored me and climbed to the top and gasped. I suggested we lower the ceiling or replace the chandelier with a ceiling fan. My love said no to both suggestions. So on days when the out side winds and temperatures were at their worst she would wear one of the beautiful sweaters her mom had crocheted.Thank you for the memory. She looked so beautiful smiling and warm at the top of that ladder. Stay well, as always …

Bravo, Will. I’ve read that some folks of extreme means are spending a considerable amount of their wealth in the search for immortality. Here a life form, beautiful in its simplicity, lives on naturally, as the searchers cannot. It’s also kinda hot for a jellyfish. Stay well, “ live long and prosper” as always ….. -

Good morning everyone. I walked out into the postage stamp this am. I was enjoying the relatively mild air and the occasional drops of rain filtering through my 40 year old unending acorn giver. Looking around everything seemed so green and vibrant for an October 7th. I chanced to look down and saw a lone leaf dressed for the season. My elder thoughts raced to joyous Falls past and then poignantly to Autumns of the future. Stay well, as always. -
