We had hail yesterday with the storms. Not much lightning down here though. And only 0.15" of rain. I have a few friends with wells that are concerned. They are still getting low water warnings on their systems even in December. That's almost unheard of. The only real heavy rain event we've had since July was Helene, and that all fell so quickly it mostly ran off and did nothing for groundwater replenishment.

That was a really depressing storm for here. Missed out on flakes by about 5 miles. Kinda like the big storm last year.

Very efficient radiational cooling last night. Got down to 18.9.

Longer term, I'm hoping we pick back up a more normal rainfall pattern as spring rolls in. We really don't need a third straight year of drought.

It’s even snowing a bit down here tonight. I would say this overperformed.

Models still not fired up for any rain in the eastern half of the state. Looks like we miss with heavy rains both to the west and the east.- 689 replies

GFS is not enthused about any real rain in this half of the state. It's almost totally dry through 384 down here.- 689 replies

I've actually been pretty worried about the health consequences this dry weather will have for the areas that were inundated with feet of mud following the floods. That mud is going to (and probably already is) turn into dust and become airborne. There's no telling what sort of nasty stuff is in it.- 689 replies

It was kinda hard to tell on webcams but it looked to me like the big boat dock at the riverfront started going underwater today. The Ironman triathlon was held here yesterday. They had already announced a cancellation of the swimming portion of the event on Friday.- 689 replies

Yeah if we could move the relevant posts I think that's the best move for archiving's sake. Pretty crazy that we didn't have a dedicated thread for what is likely to wind up being our most costly natural disaster.- 689 replies

I’m a little surprised Clemson was able to host this game.

I made a drive to McMinn county today to deal with a roadway issue (frankly inconsequential compared to what’s happening elsewhere), and I noticed way heavier than normal volumes on I-75. We actually had backups over white oak mtn. That normally only happens on holiday weekends. Likely to be the norm for a while unfortunately.- 689 replies

SR81, SR107, and I-26 are all gone. Not sure about any others. I imagine all will need to be inspected for scour damage even if they are still standing.- 689 replies

There is a tremendous amount of infrastructure damage. I shudder to think what traffic will be like on roads like US64 without I-40 and I-26 available to trucks. I've just seen a picture of I-26. It's going to be a while before we get even the major roads back to normal. Much less the countless smaller roads with slides and washouts.- 689 replies

Common denominator with the severe flooding in NE TN is the watershed. The Pigeon, the French Broad, and the Nolichucky all drain Western NC. Newport, for example, didn't even get very much rain. The 4 day rainfall total is around 4-5" per radar, but they are having record flooding because of the magnitude of the event that took place in western NC this week.- 689 replies
