Thread Layouts

We've seen some confusion over the past few days as we try to clean up our threads and move away from one catchall super thread,  We've become too large as a sub-forum to lump all posts into one thread.  They move too fast at times and relevant information can quickly become lost.  Myself, Will, Ryan, and Brian have had discussions as a group on this and this is how we'd like to see things go as of right now.  It's likely not perfect and we can modify them if we see it's not working.

1.  A Pattern Discussion Thread(s) where we discusss the overall pattern and is relegated to non-specific threats.

2.  A Model Discussion Thread(s) with PBP's to show mostly just what the models are showing.

3.  As we get closer in, say by Day 3 to 4, we an have a Storm Specific Thread(s).  This would include Model Analysis

with Q&A and just general discussion about the potential storm.  You can re-post the same information from the Models Thread if you want.  There will be some redundancies as threats materialize.

4.  A Storm Observations/Nowcast Thread once the storm is imminent.

5.  A Banter/General Obs Thread(s) which is the catchall thread for daily observations and other stuff that does not fit the above listed threads.

6.  And Member can create their own thread as well if they'd like to add their own thoughts on a storm or pattern or whatever they want to.

I will add that this isn't some perfect solution either. But the pattern/discussion threads had become a complete and utter disaster.

I specifically went back about 3-4 years ago and read several similar type pattern threads and I'll be honest that I was a bit shocked at how much the discussion had degraded since then in our forum.

I think a lot of it is that every emotion was now being posted in our discussion threads. In addition, we noticed just how many people chime in now during play by play talk as models come out. So we needed to split those posts up and this is the best way we came up with.

Hopefully this makes reading some of the discussion threads much easier. We would really appreciate it too if you could help us follow these general guidelines. It makes our job easier...less time moving posts and more time talking about weather.

I like the idea.  For larger, more impactful storms that have model consensus  a thread should be started more than 3 or 4 days out.  All banter should be eliminated as well.

On the obs thread if the location is not stated it should be eliminated,  even for the obvious posters.  The core group knows who each person is but during storms there are many people lurking that do not know locations.

Most people have their locations beneath their avatars.

The model discussion one seems a bit broad. But whatever.

I would argue violently that it shold be "broad"

I think a part of the the "problem" is rules tend to be interpreted as BLACK AND WHITE , its probably natural to interpret them as such but in the real world...however when your going 70 in a 65 your still usually ok,  and especially on this board w a friendly community there has to be some leeway or the camaraderie dies and you don't gain much weather knowledge that wasn't already there. So in off hours or when nothing special is going on, it takes 20 seconds to find info your looking for  instead of 10, I dunno. This board always seem pretty on point to me when its storm time.

I guess the model thread is about models in general.  Let's see if I got it right.  If I was going to be talking about how the NAM seems to over zealous in QPF in general, I comment in the model thread.  If I am posting how the 18Z NAM doesn't bring the 850 line north of me until over .50" of precip has fallen in the Jan 3/4th storm I post that in the storm thread.  I am not sure what happens when a storm threat is a day or two away and a model does a 180.  Are all the posts about the new run suppose to go in the model thread or the storm thread?

I don't see the model thread having much activity in general compared to a storm thread.   If we could just keep a storm thread to analysis and keep banter in a separate thread I think we would be okay.   Since I am in just south of the White Mountains I tend to do most my posting in that thread, analysis, models and obs.  You guys down there in general don't want to hear about the fact its dumping up here and your having another rainer, anyway!

Think long term Bob. Let's say you want to look at the thread in three years. At some point it will get closed due to it hitting 50 pages or so. It will be replaced by another thread of the same title?

Call it Winter 2014-2015 maybe. I dunno. Just for archiving/searching making the title mean something might help

I am prob alone in this thinking

No you aren't alone. I suggested locking it and starting a new one each month or so. We don't want a thread with 25,000 posts either aside from just being able to find older archived model play by play easier.

No you're not, I just don't know the time at which a thread should be closed.

Maybe seasonal?
